Does anyone have any suggestions for good last minute things that a group of volunteers could do? My friend has an event with too many volunteers and we want to put them to good use doing something positive. Think along the lines of writing letters to soldiers for the holidays. Ready. Go!

Does this mean you do not have the transportation to get them to various places? If so, how about making cards for children on cancer wards?

Yeah, this kind of became a last minute thing. Everyone volunteered to help at a Thanksgiving for the homeless event but there are about 20 to many volunteers, so instead of turning them away, we want to find something productive, positive and giving to do instead of showing up and having nothing to do OR being turned away all together.

What a great problem to have, and one I've had myself. Is there anyway to take them to another shelter or church close to that one? When I have a larger group than one shelter can handle, I'll send some to another one close by. How about "Meals on Wheels" or just having them walk the streets to pass out sandwiches to those who won't wander into a shelter? Best wishes to you!
  • Arrange for them to go to the local Humane Society and walk the dogs for a bit!

We're actually bringing the men from the shelter to a catering hall via limo bus for a catered thanksgiving. There's not much to do in the area of the hall. That's why I was going with the letter writing thing.. they could be in the hall in a space and write some letters and just rotate people through. I was just trying to think of other ideas so that people can work for several hours instead of 30 minutes.

I see. Well, I'd go with writing letters to soldiers, people in nursing homes or cards/pictures for terminal children living in the hospital.
