Thanksgiving tips

What will everyone be doing to keep on track during Thanksgiving?
My plan is to eat a lean cuisine at dinner and since that will mostly fill me up, I'll be able to take extra small portions of whatever I feel like having.
Anyone have tips on snacking throughout the day though? There will be so much yummy food it will be hard to turn it down.

So, you're going to eat a preservative and sodium laden frozen dinner PLUS whatever is on the table? I urge you to rethink this plan. Please, just eat the real food. Eat well, employ moderation if you must, but do not sacrifice space in your tummy for something that is less than worthy.

I'm going to enjoy the holiday :D Probably not going to log, going to have a lovely meal with my family, and be back on track on Friday!
  • Great idea! I will eat a broth based veggie soup before heading for my mother's for dinner. While at dinner, I plan to only take a few bits of everything I want so that I do not feel deprived but remain in control. (Not to mention the high intensity interval training class I will attend Thursday morning.)

Good luck and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I'm gonna make baklava and have baklava ala mode. This is in addition to turkey, gravy, sweet potatoes, and pie. Lots and lots of pie. Traditionally, when I get home from thanksgiving dinner I eat a bowl of Cap'n Crunch. Just kidding. I eat 2 bowls.

Bahahaha. Fantastic! My plan, too. Maybe I can cram in 3 bowls? Push through the pain!

I'm going to eat at maintenance level and I will be logging. But I will not stress if I go over my calories. I'll need the energy for Black Friday shopping. I'll also be eating breakfast out Friday morning. Black Friday tradition.

Enjoy the day. One meal is not going to ruin all your efforts. I plan of having a little bit of everything that I like over the course of 4 days. I don't stuff myself and love the leftovers.

I'll probably exercise in the morning and then go eat a ton of food. I may quick add 3,000ish calories to my diary, just for fun.

I would ditch the lean cuisine and enjoy yourself. :flowerforyou:

If one day of eating well will not make you thinner, why would one day of indulging make you gain weight? Just enjoy yourself. I am talking to ALL OF YOU!

One day of indulgence will not kill anyone. I plan to enjoy the food and company.

Just enjoy the holiday dear. Really doing this is kind of like drinking a Slimfast with your meal, all you are really doing is doubling up on calories.

I, too, am planning on eating something before I go in order to try to eat in moderation at the dinner. I will probably have a salad before I go and take a salad so I can eat it there with lots of turkey breast.

No, one meal will not make or break, but I have too many of those "one meal" splurges. I still need to learn to practice that moderation thing.

I already know I'm going to be over that day... so I'll probably at best just guess the amount of calories and go with that. I'll try not to go completely overboard though.

I think if you can not log and still find a way to be somewhat mindful of what you're eating, that might be ok. Just because you log and/or are mindful of what you are eating doesn't mean you can't enjoy and have a little extra! The way our brains work is that we build certain neuronal pathways that build stronger "will power" muscles when we impose limits on ourselves. If you let yourself go too crazy you'll feel all full and blah and undo valuable circuitry you've built in your brain.

I think I will try to have a heavy workout the day before (to build up some "credit") and the day after and will try to log also. If I log I can know exactly how much exercise I need to do to "pay my debt". Sometimes it takes me a few days to catch up. I also plan on having some fruit or other light snack before the big meal so I am not ravished. I may also have a protein supplement (I'm vegetarian- no turkey here) on the morning of Turkey Day.

    Happy Thanksgiving Everyone, be grateful!
  • My husband had a Thanksgiving dinner at his work today. I limited myself and took smaller portions. I stayed away from the bread, potatoes, gravy, dressing and the dessert table. I was still amazed when I logged everything in(550 cal) how quickly they all add up. But what amazed me more was two months ago, I could have filled the plate up and still had room for every dessert. What I'm going to do is continue eating my fresh fruits and vegetables like normal and moderate myself at dinner. I wasn't disgusted with myself to day. In fact, a small NSV was someone asked me if that was all I was going to eat! I was satisfied. Why go back to bad habits?!!!

You gotta do what works for you, but the 2 craziest things I can think of are me eating Lean Cuisine on Thanksgiving and/or feeling even slightly full after eating a Lean Cuisine.

I've been told by a trainer that it is good to blow out your calories occasionally so that your body will not become too accustomed to the amount that you are feeding it. I've done that on occasions when I felt I was plateauing a little. I've planned in advance for Thanksgiving to be one of those days. I won't go crazy, but I'll probably eat some of everything that is provided, including the fresh bread I've been talked into making. And I'll definitely save room for a piece of my aunt's fantastic chocolate sheet cake! But just one piece, mind you. :)

I agree...everything I have read from even registered dieticians say enjoy the day! If you don't you will binge later or feel cheated so enjoy the day and get back to normal the next day drink plenty water and exercise!

I plan on logging, but not worried if I go over. However, I'm planning on a 4 mile run the morning of, so I should have lots of extra calories. I've been sick, and my stomach has shrunk, so why stuff and be miserable?

    You have huge hat.
  • I'm gonna eat my regular breakfast. Work out at the gym (they are open yeah!). Eat Thanksgiving lunch. The stuff I really love and I will have my pumpkin pie and not overdo it. A light dinner. Back on track Friday.

I did this on Sunday at my church and it worked out well. I tracked and actually stayed within my calories. I wasn't really trying to I just decided to log and I did really well. :) I had cereal for supper that day.
