Calorie Deficit???? How much is too much?

It is my understanding that eating too little will put your body in "starvation mode", burning less calories, slowing weight loss. But exercising more, despite also creating a calorie deficit, will do the opposite. It will increase your metabolism and speed weight loss. I have always understood that given the choice between eating less or moving more, the preference is always to move more.
Of course this may simply be because I like food and if I move more I get to eat more and still be fit...0
