So, I have long since figured out that if I am not hungry, food is not the answer. I have often used food to cope with overwhelming anger, happiness, despair - you name it.

Today, I brought food to a colleague who just had a mastectomy/reconstruction for breast cancer. She is my age, with 4 young children. I was brought to tears of sorrow and rage to see her body and family torn apart.

On return home, instead of eating to stuff the emotions, I talked to my husband and my mother, and wrote a blog entry about it. I prepared and ate a healthy supper, and then went to the gym.

Self-sabotaging Behaviour: 0, Shoshi: 1 . . . FTW!

Way to go..! You're learning new coping skills.. that is absolutely commendable!
  • That is a wonderful self-realization.

I did that with alcohol and food a good part of my life. I no longer drink and I have started to take care of ME and that starts with diet and exercise - Learning to be good to myself is a difficult process for me (most women) - I refuse to starve myself to be thin, I've done it for years and I am learning that food is my fuel not my best friend.

I hate dealing with my emotions - I don't like to be scared, sad, lonely but it is part of life and it takes a very strong person to just sit with those feeling and figure out why they are there and to work thru them. Most people I know have issues like that (not to my extreme maybe) - It's much easier to push your feeling down with alcohol, food, shopping, cutting, sex - it doesn't matter what it is - it's just a diversion. For me when I overate it felt good in the moment - then I turned around and beat myself up.

I am finally treating myself like I treat my friends and it's pretty great most days.
