30 DS Major knee issues!?!

Hi Guys,

Hoping someone can offer some advice, been doing 30 ds for the past 6 days, noticed on day 2 my right knee was very sore, to the right of the knee cap, pain radiating down the outside of my leg from the knee. It just got worse and worse with each day, I tried using volterol and Ice two days ago and had a day of rest to no avail, and following last nights shred the left knee is the very same now.

They are popping and clicking and when I flex the leg and bend the knee (i.e. going up stairs) the pain is immense. I've never had knee probs in the past and have been using the cross trainer and treadmill without issue for years. I also walk roughly 30 mins every day without fail and have done for the past year without any knee issues.

It doesnt feel muscular at all, in fact I'm finding L1 easy going, it's more like pain in the bone or like my knees have loose cartilage or something.

Has anyone else had this? Should I stop the shred? I've checked posture, foot position etc and never do any squats etc where my knees some over the foot, I'm pretty sure im doing all moves correctly.

Ouch!

I think the 30 day shred is hard on the knees. I was going to buy it and try it out, but I read the reviews on Amazon and several reviewers had mentioned knee issues after working out with it....

I would say to take a break for a bit and see if the knee problems disappear....

If I had a $ for every person I have seen that has had issues with their knees while doing 30DS I would be a rich woman!.....hence the reason I will not buy the dvd......

Having said that I have also seen many people that love it to bits - but if I were you I would stop ( or adjust the exercises) until you figure out exactly what is causing the pain....

    Right there with you!
My knee pain didn't start until level 3 of the Shred, but now it isn't going away and I finished 30DS about 2 weeks ago. I have read other threads on here that this is quite common. You're doing the right thing though by resting and ice though. Maybe try doing the Shred every other day, and sticking to walking/jogging on the days in between if that's not bugging your knee.

    Thanks Folks,

Didnt realise it was so common. Will try day on day off and make it a 40 odd day shred, will try alternating with cross training in between as that seems relatively low impact.

I'm surprised Jillian can still use her legs!!

I had the same issues and 2 things helped me:
    1. Check your shoes. I was wearing my running shoes at first. Once I switched to a cross training shoe it got better.
    2. Make sure you are doing squats and lunges correctly. I also cleaned up my form a bit and that helped too.

P.S. I've always had bad knees (2 surgeries in my 20s) but after doing the 2 things I mentioned I can do Jillian again. Now if my shoulder would stop giving out.

    Good Luck!
  • Yeah.. maybe just follow the beginner girl first and also make sure your lunges and squats are done correctly. There's no reason for it to hurt. Make sure your knee NEVER goes past your foot. Keep your legs at a right angle and never past that or your knees will take strain. It ould also be the skipping.. all i did here was jump on one leg at a time instead bouncing off both. Just keep your jumps short and low impact and you should be fine.

I think the best way to do 30DS is once a day mon to fri (at the most) and then have the weekend off, if you read the instructions or watch the introduction, apparently somewhere JM says don't do it every day, I think a lot of people think you literally do 30DS for 30 days straight, and that's not right and that will cause injury xx

I do it every day sometimes twice a day without problems. Glutamine is something to take, I know a runner who avoided keyhole surgery on his knee by taking this supplement.
no one mentions what size weights you are using. Maybe try it with lighter wieghts?
but if it is really causing pain ditch it and find something else that works for you, just because it works for many people doen'st mean you should do it. Do not try to persevere thru the pain as you will end up with a permanent injury which stops you from doing other exercises as well!

Sound advice, my friend carried on exercising with a groin injury and ended up with a fractured hip.
