Try the Women's Health Big Book of Exercises. It has great photographs and instructions on exercises for every muscle, many using dumbells and body weight only. It also gives guidelines on how much weight to use, how many reps, and has some sample workouts. Don't overthink it... just start lifting and make sure you are challenging your muscles.0

I agree try New Rules of Lifting for Women. This book explains it all and banishes the fabled words that have become part of the womens exercise diary and their meanings changed over time0
