How do I cut out the sugar?

How do I cut back on the sugar in my diet? I'm a vegetarian and a good portion of what I eat is fruit and vegetables. (LOVE fruit!!) The fruit is making my sugar intake really high, and probably hindering my weight loss. The only other sugar I have is a ltitle bit in my coffee in the morning (1tsp, measured.) My morning protein smoothie is more than the MFP recommended sugar intake alone.

What do I snack on to cut back on sugar? Suggestions would be appreciated.

If you're still under your calorie goals, this is not hindering your weight loss.

I would just ignore the sugar column and track something else. I beleive the MFP recommended sugar intake refers to added and refined sugar, but MFP does not have the ability to distinguish between sugars. This is why I do not track sugar at all, milk, yogurt and fruit would have me over everyday.

What Eric said. If all of your sugar is from fruit (except the 1 tsp in coffee) - no need to worry.

And killagb is correct in that if you are MEETING your cal goals, this shouldn't really affect loss

    **EDIT - tsp not tbsp!

I deleted my sugar column for that very reason. I couldn't take the pressure. I was always over in my sugar. Even though it was from fruit. I didn't get fat from eating too many apples, okay?

    just my 2 cents;)

Sugar from fruits and vegetables isn't really the same as the sugar you are putting in your coffee, but this site puts them all under the same category. If you are concerned about it, pay attention and take out the sugar that is coming from those and see what you are left with.

Besides that, nuts are a good choice, and certain fruits are lower in sugars than others. I also use Stevia sweetener in place of sugar in my tea, and I have had it in coffee before as well and it tastes just fine.

    Good luck!

I dumped the sugar column for basically the same reason. I eat a lot of fruit and berries, very little processed sugary food. In my own experience the fruit/berries were not inhibiting my weight loss, and blood tests have proven beyond a doubt that at least for my own body, they aren't having causing a blood sugar problem at all. Triglycerides = 35. I'm not going to argue with that, lol.

Note I do incorporate plenty of cinnamon and a lot of raw salt-free nuts into my diet also, and that may help with the sugar metabolism.

Yup, if calories in is less than calories out, you will lose weight. Just make sure you are getting enough protein so you don't lose muscle mass instead of fat weight.

Good move - just make sure to keep up the healthy eating though and avoid the added sugar-foods (unlike the milky way I just had... dammit)

And the other interesting point is that not all fruits are created equally ... some have a higher sugar and carb content than others. I try to concentrate on those w/a low glycemic index. I avoid bananas and watermelon.

I eat a banana just about every day.
  • My sugar intake is next to nil - I eat lots of vegetables and no fruits. So to cut down on sugar intake, eat one less fruit and sub in a serving of broccoli, or kale, or cauliflower, or asparagus or any other leafy green that is high in fiber and low in sugar. It's just as, if not more, healthy, and you'll still be on track. :D
