Green tea- what does it taste like?

So I have been hearing about green tea and was wondering if I would even like it... I do like regular tea- well sweet tea but I like the taste of tea in general. So does "green tea" taste like "tea" or does it have a more distintive taste? And what do you add to your "green tea"? Sweetner, cream etc... what? Thanks!

It's kind of earthy. Why don't you buy a cup of it and taste it? I don't add anything to tea.0

I think it has a milder, more herbal 'plant-like' taste. I really like it.0

You can get green tea in all sorts of flavors. My favorite is Candy Cane lane by Celestial Seasons.... I usually put a splenda in it.0

I'm fairly certain you should drink green tea plain maybe with some lemon. It tastes.... Nothing like sweet tea. It's bitterish with a blandness to it. Don't know how to explain??? In any case if you think it's going to be like sleepytime or raspberry zinger you're mistaken!0

It's more earthy than regular tea. You should just try it to see if you like it. I don't add anything to mine and a i soak the bag until my tea is practically toxic. I like it strong. If you find it too strong or bitter, add a little tiny bit of Truvia. It's super sweet so you only need a little.0

Yummy.
=]
Goto Starbucks and grab a ZEN tea. THE BEST!!!
PS, If you end up liking it. The brand they use is sold at walmart for 1/3 the price in tea bag form.0 -
it tastes like... yep, green tea. Sorry I couldn't hep it.
Just try it.0 -

I like how you said "earthy", I was going to say taste like dirt. You put it much better. :-) I tried to drink green tea when I was pregnant and hated it, but I do love plain black tea, so I think it's a personal preference. I did drink a green tea that was flavored a long time ago and that was good (made by Republic of Tea) so maybe something with a flavor would be more appealing.0 -
Green tea is a hard one to explain - it kind of has a musty sense to it, but it's not gross. I usually have mine straight up, but it's good with lemon, honey, etc. I have at least three glasses (only one caffeinated) everyday.0

just get yourself a cup at Teavana or somewhere and give it a try. It is good, but different than regular tea.0

Invest in a higher quality green tea, sencha if you can. The tase of green tea is dependent on the brand (origin, variety, etc.) just like common black tea, but don't expect as much bitterness and strength from green tea. The reason I say invest in a better quality one is because I've had green tea that has tasted 'fishy' before. Any of the popular Lipton or Tetley varieties are awesome. If you want to flavour your tea, and stay away from refined sugar, I suggest organic honey or agave nectar. Agave nectar is really sweet and does not have the same consequences as normal sugar. Also, fresh lemon in green tea is very refreshing! If you're not good with caffiene, make sure to check the labels, some green tea can have 3-4 times the caffeine of regular coffee. Hope this helps!0

lol at the above..
Don't add milk, just a little lemon and then sweetner if you fancy it sweeter. it's lovely though.0 -
can never get it strong enough to taste like anything...
I try, but I love strong tea and stronger coffee.
and i wish i could believe all they hype...0 -
the first few times I tried it over a few years. I didn't like it one bit and i drink tea. but had some a few weeks back and really liked it0

Yeah, green tea is more vegetal and astringent than regular tea. I prefer mine more if it is brewed with a cooler temp of water. You really have to stop brewing it more quickly than black tea because it will get bitter quickly.0

I know artificial sweeteners are not very popular around here but I buy the diet green tea at Giant and it tastes a lot like normal sweet tea. I but a gallon of the stuff whenever I go shopping, love it.0

What on earth is Diet green tea?? Green Tea has appx 0 calories!0

It's green tea that has been sweetened with artificial sweeteners. Unsweetened tea is not very tasty ya know, at least not to me.0 -
Earthy is a good way to describe it, I think it's a little on the weak side when compared to black tea or even fruit teas. When I started drinking it I had to have sugar but now I can drink it plain.0

I've noticed a lot of green teas are terribly bitter, but the better brands have a smooth flavor and are really good. Try Tazo Zen tea bags. I hate the Bigeloo and Lipton bags - gag! If you like loose leaf tea, buy silver needles - my favorite!!0

Ahhhhh, gotcha
Try it out unsweetened. It might grow on you.
I'm gonna go get a cup of it now thanks to this thread.0 -

They take the yellow out to make it diet.... So it's actually Blue Tea
(Seriously, the "diet green tea" lid is Blue.)0 -

To be fair, I am talking about cold tea, not the hot stuff. When I brew a cup of hot tea I use honey or Truvia.0 -
People often describe it as "grassy" in flavor... straight green does taste like that a bit, but I have actually really grown to like it a lot. And there are all kinds of blends you can get, Zen by Tazo being the best I've tasted, that mix green tea leaves with mints and lemongrasses and it is really good!0

Of all the different kinds of teas I've tried, green tea seems to vary the most in taste. I really like the taste of most green teas, but know that different brands (and blends) vary wildly.
I suggest trying something mild to start out with, like Tazo's Zen green tea. (Amazon link: http://tinyurl.com/7wve84x) That's a good blend. My absolute favorite is Ito En's Pure Green Tea. I drink that stuff cold/room temperature. (Amazon link: http://tinyurl.com/872kl42) But that is fairly stout, and some people don't like that flavor.0 -

That must be it
All I know is the stuff tastes fantastic!
Oh and btw, she mentioned sweet tea so I'm thinking she is talking about cold tea... at least I think so.0 -
I buy flavoured green teas...the ones by Twinings are really good...my favourite at the moment is Apple & Pear, the Pomegranate one is good too. The plain green tea was just a little too bland for my liking :-))
Edit: I drink them plain...I've also found that if you leave the bag to stew for too long they taste pretty nasty, a couple of mins sat in mug does it just fine...or several squeezes of the bag if you can't be bothered to wait...like me most of the time lol!!0 -
I love Green Tea. I usually get Arizona Green Tea with Honey and Ginseng or Lipton Citrus Green Tea. Both are tasty choices.0
-
Thanks everyone for your responses!!! Looks like I will have to give it a try, but at least now I THINK I know what to expect when I take that first sip...lol...maybe! But I WILL give it a try! :drinker:0
