The problem with "It's only one day" holiday mentality

I been thinking about Thanksgiving and the " it's only one day" theory and have come to the conclusion that for me it leads to a slippery slope...add in a Birthday, Christmas, New Years, Superbowl. Thankgiving. Valentines, 4th of July, Labor Day, Easter, Halloween, summer vacation, winter vacation, etc - and I can quickly see myslef having 20 - 3,000 calorie days in one year - that's 17 POUNDS! I'm going to indulge Thursday but still be very aware of what I eat. Wish me luck!

But I have at least one 3,000 calorie day every month, regardless of the holiday status... It might make me take an extra six or seven months to get all of the weight off, but at least I had fun getting there!0

It really is only One. Day.
It's your choice to get on the slippery slope and start sliding after that one day. I choose not to punish myself for letting my weight get out of hand last year by not trusting myself with one day. I am giving myself more credit.

I have about one 3,000 calorie day per week. If you haven't stuffed yourself with 1,400 calories worth of sushi in one sitting, you haven't lived.0

Point 1. "20" is less than 365.
Point 2. Don't you think controlled indulgence is better than uncontrolled indulgence?0 -
well not really 17 pounds.. if you didnt burn off any calories at all than it would be right? I think its more like 5 ish.. Correct me if im wrong, (I really dont know) but doesn't your body use like around 2000 calories a day performing bodily functions? then that would leave like 1000 extra calories a day, which times 20 is 20,000. divided by 3500 would be like 5.7 pounds ish.. and thats if you didnt excersize that day. Thats just the way i think of it...not sure if its correct. I do agree with you though, theres a lot of days that could lead downhill. It makes me nervous too...0

That's why we are here. so we can eat like fat pigs every once in awhile and still hit our goals.0

Are you planning to go 3000 cals over your daily 1200 \ 1500? if not I think your calculations are off......most of us needs around 1800 to 2000 calories to maintain....so if you are eating 3000 you are only over by maybe 1000 calories - 20 times a year - not 3000 calories 20 times a year....
The ocassionsl splurge is what keeps me good 95% of the time.....and the weight is still coming off...0 -

But a 3000 calorie day isn't 3000 calories over your maintenance. It's probably closer to 1000 calories over maintenance, so twenty of those could equal about five and a half pounds in a year, if and only if you ate AT your maintenance calories the rest of the year.
So if you take 20 holidays out of the year where you eat 3000 calories, but the rest of the year, stay at a 500 calorie a day deficit... instead of losing 52 pounds in a year, you'd lose 46.5 pounds in a year. That's a tradeoff I'd be willing to take!0 -
I only have to be perfect 80% of the time0
-
I'm pretty adamant about going over 500-1000 once a week. That's 26k-52k calories per year, or 7.4-14.85 lbs per year. Yet when I was aiming to lose weight, I lost it. You have to consider the splurge in the perspective of your overall calorie deficit and lifestyle.0

I think I'm about to vomit just thinking of that much sushi...or is it just sushi in general doing this to me? :sick:0 -
I get what you're saying. I think people "think" it's only one day, but really, with leftovers in the fridge, do you really let it only be one day? I am not making a huge gluttonous meal this time. I am making a turkey dinner with normal amounts of sides. Otherwise, I'll be eating that 3000 calorie meal everyday for a week!0

When the fish is fried or, better yet, the entire roll is fried, it's really easy to eat that much. Fancy sushi is the only way to go. :drinker:0 -
just eat sensibly on thanksgiving. watch your portions and hit the dessert table once not 5 times.0

It is easier at your age to lose the weight. Your body has more muscle and you have more energy. In my 30s and 40s and 50s Id give up ice cream and drop 10 pounds in a month. For me If i ate all that sushi it would take forever.0

Yes! Exactly.0 -

Best quote I have heard all day!0 -
I work out as had as I do so I CAN eat. I don't know about the rest of you but I love good food. I don't work this hard so I can never have fun the rest of my life. That would blow donkey balls...0

Enjoy your cheat days and don't think too much of it unless you see yourself "cheating" more than once a week.
Keeps your body guessing, and keeps you motivated since you aren't depriving yourself of everything.
I'm a major foodie. If I didn't have wings or a burger or a juicy steak or whatever else I enjoy every now and then, I'd fall of the wagon really fast.0 -

And there' s no way in hell I'm doing that!0 -

PFffssshhh... I'm hitting that dessert table until I can't walk anymore.0 -
I don't feel like it's punishing myself to record what I eat on Thanksgiving anyway. I don't have to refuse to eat it. I can pig out all I want, I just need to record it on the tracker so I know what I did. I probably won't even workout on Thanksgiving, no time beforehand, and I sure won't feel like it after I'm stuffed full of turkey.0

Thats not why I am here.0

Mmm, you're making me crave a spider roll. Mmm, soft shell crab.
