"Breakfast?"

When people say breakfast what is really meant?
I usually work nights and tend to sleep most of the morning away. So by that time the typical breakfast time is over. So I am always worried when things say "eat breakfast to lose weight" because really I never do.
I do tend to eat lunch not too long after I wake up though, would that count as my breakfast? If so, I have also heard that you shouldn't eat after a certain time in the evening because your digestive track moves slower. Should I not eat after 8pm? Seems like a long time between meals that way.
Sorry for all the questions, it's just something that I've always wondered about while watching all the shows about losing weight. What do you suggest?

Surely it's just the time between waking up and eating that counts as 'breakfast' ...I think it's just about kick starting your metabolism? Just my opinion though.
Also I think the 'don't eat after 8pm thing' is rubbish. A calorie is a calorie no matter what time. I just try and eat something lighter if I eat later so it doesn't sit heavy on my tummy...and take a little walk round the block if I can to aid digestion!0 -
breakfast is your 1st meal after you wake up generally comes from breaking your fast thus break-fast. it doesnt matter what you read or hear because you are not on the normal schedule as most people and your body adjusts to your daily routine anyway0

They suggest not eating after a certain hour... but depends on what your activity level is going to be like before you go to bed, as your body doesn't need as much fuel to sleep or relax as it does if you were still up and about.
But as discodaddy61 said, "you are not on the normal schedule as most people and your body adjusts to your daily routine anyway"0 -
breakfast means literally to "break the fast".
It is whenever you wake up. If you sleep all day, wake up at 5PM, and eat a steak and potatoes at 6PM, then that is your "break fast"... time of day has nothing to do with it.
And the act of "needing to eat within so much time of waking up" is crap too.
Everyone is different. Some people swear by it, but it doesn't work for others.
Do what works best for YOU, never mind what all the conflicting articles and advice say...0 -
I agree with everyone else on the breakfast thing. Just YOUR first meal of the day.
Also, I did hear in an article and on some Dr's show (not Grey's Anatomy! hA!)- that the eating after a certain time thing is garbage. A calorie is a calorie. Lots of snacking is bad-- at any time. Good Luck0 -
Thank you for all your answers. I guess I am working myself up to much trying to make this weight loss thing actually work this time. lol.0
