Does anyone else have episodes of shakiness, lightheadedness, after or even before exercising? After? I've had my blood sugar checked recently with no report of high or low and just wondering what's up...

Are you taking any PWO or etc? You might be pushing too hard as well. It's hard to tell, but I'd see a Dr. about. In the end we are people on the internet, real medical advice can only be truly dished out by a Dr.
  • Last time I was shaky and lightheaded I had a major stroke. See a dr.

I've had no shakiness, but after long runs it has happened that I've felt a little lightheaded. Usually for me it had to do with nutrition and hydration pre and during the runs.
If you do intense or long workouts you should look into food and nutrition for during your effort as well as before the effort. Since I've started taking gels on my long runs I haven't felt lightheaded after any of them.

Doctor! And also like already mentioned, look at any supplements you're taking and make sure you're eating enough regularly.

Do you eat before exercising? I can't eat a meal, but I make a protein shake or smoothie. I've only gotten the shakies or lightheaded if my blood sugar was too from working out You may had enough food in your system when you were tested, hence normal blood work. Also after working out I may have a protein bar if I'm not going home immediately to eat.

eat more, and get plenty rest. as a college student I feel sick sometimes but that's me running off 3 hours of sleep. drink plenty of water at least an hour before. a HRM is good to have not only to see how many calories you're burning but because if your heart rate is getting to high then that could cause it. your MAX is (220-your age), my MAX heart rate is 200 (should not try and push past it) My ideal range is (120-180) so I know that when I'm exercising if I'm in that range or at least between 190-200 when I'm doing intervals I am okay.
  • I've been shaky and lightheaded - and every time it's happened it was because I hadn't eaten enough leading up to the workout.

If you don't eat and you have huge exertions your blood sugar can still get low without being diabetic. A glass of juice would make the feeling go away quickly. (It's similar to donating blood and having to have sugar afterwards so you don't pass out.) If it happens all the time then speak to a doctor.

I've had that several times before, and I agree that a doctor visit is in line here.

I was not metabolizing my food very well. It turns out I had a thyroid condition and now that I'm being properly treated, I feel a lot better.

could you have hypoglycemia? I used to before I changed my eating and exercising habits. I would get the need to stuff myself with sugar and then feel better. If I waited too long in a day without sugar I would have the shakes and get weak. Like diabetes but a bit earlier in stages. Have your blood sugars checked a few times this should tell you in the long run. It helps to stay away from sweets, pop, etc. simple sugars- eat more complex carbs when possible or eat smaller but more frequent meals....hope this helps:)

I have hypoglycemia but it never surfaced on a routine check at the doctor's office. It wasn't until I had bloodwork drawn and my insulin levels were checked that it was found. I had all of the symptoms mentioned in the original post so it's just a thought.

I can't see your food diary, but a possibility is that you're under-eating.

But its more likely dehydration. Try a sports drink during your next workout.

The simple solution, usually is the solution.
