Obese - Marathon run - Need help

Dear all,

Am still in my obese level trying to lose weight.

Today i found an organization which is helping the Orphan children by collecting the money through a Marathon which is going to be held on 10th December. I thought that it would be great if I can participate in that, by contributing some money, in a way this will be my first marathon in my life.

Actually there are different levels of Marathon here, and I want to opt for JUST 5K run, as I cannot even imagine in my wildest dreams about more further. But still for this 5K run, i believe I wont be able to make it, as I hardly jog continously for 0.5-0.8 km at a stretch, even though I've been walking 5.2kms every day brisk walk.

So, i require some valuable suggestions from you as to how I can proceed and take part in that 5K run.

Thanks

I would suggest you find out if it's possible to walk it if you have too, or if it will be full of runners only. Chances are, since it's for a charity, walking it would be fine.

I'd suggest starting the couch to 5k app now, and see how far you get by then - good luck!

Google 'Couch to 5K', it's an interval training program that starts you off gradually. And no matter what, just getting out and doing it is an accomplishment. I love the poster that says, 'no matter how slow you're going, you're still lapping everyone on the couch!' Good Luck! :)

I think it would be totally acceptable to walk it. The race is so close there isn't a whole lot of training you can do to prepare for it so you're gonna have to kinda work with what you've got on this one. If you would like to run it though, try walk/running. When you get tired of running, even if it's just a short distance, start walking to rest instead of stopping to rest. That's how I started running back in 2009 & I've now completed 2 full marathons & I'm no longer in the "obese" catagory, but I was when I started. Set a goal of another race that you have time to train for. Try the C25K program or look online for another 5k training program that works for you. And never say never! You may be hooked after you cross that first finish line. I know I was! Good luck!

Start by doing what you can, run for as far as long as you can and then try and push it further every time you go out. Couch to 5K sounds like a great idea.

Thanks to each one of you dearly.

As suggested by you all i'll try this C25K program. I'll google and get the details.

This place is really something truly inspiring with people like you around who are there to inspire and boost and push us to achieve our goals. Am so happy to be on this site. Once again thanks a lot for your advice. I'll try that program and will post here after the 5K run event.

    Best Regards.
