hi I am looking for help on my food journal. I am always over on sugar. How much sugar should I have a day. Also, it seems to count refined and unrefined sugars equally and I dont' think they are ?!?
What should I do?

  • If you want help with your food diary, you need to open up the food diary to your friends or the public in general.

As far as the sugars go ... sugars are sugars regardless of where they come from, refined sugars turn to fat as fast as the natural sugars, but the bigger issue, I would say are the refined sugars that are hidden in the carbohydrates that you don't see. If you see that your carb intake is high, cut back on these. These are sugars that reek havoc on your insulin levels.

The natural sugars that you find in the fruit are sugars too, but the fibre that you get with them is more beneficial to your system. So I would suggest that you continue with the fruit, but maybe cut it back to no more than two pieces as day, and because banana's are so high in carbs, I would eliminate these all together until you reach your goal weight.

Hope this help ... only my opinion without seeing your food diary.

it should tell you how much you should have in a day. you dont need any sugar at all for health so unless you are eating a ton of fruit, then you might want to stop eating processed foods. as long as you are under your cal goals, no problem really as you can eat whatever you want but you might be hungry more often if you are not eating enough fruits and veggies.

Your diary is still private if you want people to take a look at it.
Without looking at it I would say you need to keep your sugar to what MFP has suggested for you. There is a difference between the sugars found in fruit and other sugar found in things like donuts and cookies. You still should monitor your sugar intake no matter which type as it will hinder your weight loss. Having a piece of fruit with 20gms of sugar is much better for you than having a cookie with 20gms of sugar thats for sure.
I know if I eat any fruit I am always way over on sugar for the day even without eating "bad"sugars. I just watch as if I stop losing weight then I will really start watching my sugar closer.

    Hope this helps

    Good luck
  • i have heard from several diabetics that the sugar levels are wrong on here. i think they say 80 is normal. but thats all kinds of sugar (fruit and candy) i think you shouldnt count fruit sugars on mfp but do count that coke as towards your 25
