I have been trying to find out how many cals i burn while doing some dvd workouts, I have a few different ones. I cannot find them anywhere in here to enter them. How do I enter what ones Ive done and how do I caculate it? I do more then just walk my dog at a mod pace. And the strengh training, from what i can see, doesnt have a "calorie burned". How do I calucate the total calorie burned for the dvds and strengh training?
Or am I missing something? Please help me if you can.

If you type in "walking" there are a number of speed entries to choose from. Select the one that works for you. I know that the moderate walking the dog pace is right for me because I timed my walk and mapped the distance. You could do the same if you want to know your exact pace.

If you type in "strength training" under cardiovascular exercise, it will give you a value that way (I asked the same question when I started). I find the numbers are very low, but I use them anyway.

Sorry, can't help with the DVDs.

If you really want to be accurate on all, you can invest in a heart rate monitor and get a more accurate reading on all your calorie and enter them manually.

You can make your own exercises in MFP.
If you don't have one, buy a heart rate monitor and use that to get cals burned. If you don't want to go that far, just enter an average of about 80-100 cals per 10 minutes of cardio( HR over 115).

Depending on the type of DVD, you could enter it as circuit training, kickboxing, aerobics, calisthenics... lots of options. If it doesn't say on the box what it involves, a google search will probably turn up something. Or ask here if anyone has done it.

I'm using Jillian' 30 day shred and it's a 20 minute video so I'm counting it as 10 minutes aerobics and 10 minutes calisthenics.
  • I enter my strength training under cardio to at least mark some of the calories. I am going to be investing in a HRM soon to get the real number.

I typically log DVD's as circuit training, especially if it involves any resistance training with weights or bands. You can do this!

Most exercise dvd's, Jillian Michaels' videos in particular, can be logged as circuit training

Here's how you can get an APPROXIMATION. It looks lengthy, but it's really not that bad.

    1) Take your pulse before you get out of bed tomorrow (or after sitting and doing nothing for at least 15 min.)

    2) Complete this form and save the info (best = print screen):
    http://www.webcalcsolutions.com/Health-Calculators/Full-Body-Analysis.asp?AcctNum=3
Pay special attention to the "Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) cal/hr. figure.
Use this as the basis of all near-future calculations.

    3) Do your exercise DVD, and check your pulse several times throughout. Determine the average pulse.

    4) Complete this form:
    http://www.triathlontrainingblog.com/calculators/calories-burned-calculator-based-on-average-heart-rate/
IMPORTANT: Regardless of the length of your workout, enter 1 hour 0 min as the time.

    5) Subtract your RMR (step 2) from the "Calories Burned" (step 4).
This is the amount of calories you would burn in one hour of the exercise IN ADDITION to the calories you would have burned at rest.

    6) Search the MFP database for the exercise you did. If it's not in there, create your own.
IMPORTANT: When completing the form for the first time (in either case) enter the time as 60 min.
It's ok, you'll change it in a minute.

    7) Make sure your diary shows that the exercise has been completed (as 60 min.)

    8) Now that the rate of calories burned is programmed for you into MFP, you can go back and edit the time, and the calories will edit themselves. The burn rate will remain accurate to the settings you used from now on.
