Kids Say The Darnest Things....

So I'm an English teacher in S. Korea. My husband is in the army and is stationed here. Commenting about someone's weight in Asia is about as common as saying "you have black hair." It's not like America where it's so taboo to refer to someone as fat.

Yesterday I walked into one of my classes of 10-11 year olds and one adorable little girl came up to me to give me a hug (yes, they are very affectionate here) and commented "teacher, you are little skinny!" Her grammar isn't the best but I assume she was commenting on the fact that I have been losing weight consistently and she noticed. Anna, another student, had to verify what was said I guess and came up to me and poked my stomach and said "yes. you are only little fat now."

Then HeeChan, a boy who is very outspoken, had to be the jacka** of the class and commented "no. teacher is fat."

I guess when I'm surrounded by 110lbs Korean people on a daily basis, 150lbs is fat.

I take what the first two girls said as a success story and chuckle about what the boy said.

    Cute!

I teach 2nd grade and have a little korean girl in my class. We had a snow day last week and the next day I asked the kids what they did on their day off.

Me: What did you do? Did you sleep in?

Girl: Sleep in what? you mean my bed? yes, I sleep in bed.

    It was precious!!

kids are so cute in the things that they say. My little girl one day asked me why I was exercising, I told her I need to because I am fat and I want to lose weight and she said you don't need to lose weight. She doesn't see that I am overweight, God bless her little self.
