Hey everyone, I'm making sugar cookies for my 2nd graders, and am looking for a less-gooey, more "hard" or "firm" frosting? i bought some regular ol' cake icing... is there a way that it will harden? i just want less mess all over (as in transporting the cookies, giving them out, it being all over their faces... etc.). and a frosting that's lower cal would be great too, because i'm sure i'll be eating a cookie at the party :)

any recipes, ideas, and tricks of the trade would be greatly appreciated!

    I think you are looking for a type of "Royal Icing"
    http://www.mahalo.com/How_to_Make_Royal_Icing

    This link looks like ones I've used before. You can make it thick or thin (for more of a glaze affect).
    I would go with using the meringue powder (for safety reasons). Some use egg white powder (it's in the baking section of stores usually).
    Also, you can use meringue powder (powdered egg whites, cream of tartar) in store bought icing and it will make it harder then normal.
  • This recipe worked beautifully. This frosting dries hard in couple of hours and does so even quicker in the refrigerator. I tried this earlier this week. Although the frosting is hard to make low cal because it is basically pure sugar... I found a great low fat/low sugar Sugar Cookie recipe and they came out delicious!:tongue:

    Frosting

    INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)

    * 1 cup confectioners' sugar
    * 2 teaspoons milk
    * 2 teaspoons light corn syrup
    * 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
    * assorted food coloring

    DIRECTIONS

    1. In a small bowl, stir together confectioners' sugar and milk until smooth. Beat in corn syrup and almond extract until icing is smooth and glossy. If icing is too thick, add more corn syrup.
    2. Divide into separate bowls, and add food colorings to each to desired intensity. Dip cookies, or paint them with a brush.
