I am a 38 year old female on a 1650 calorie a day diet. I walk and ride horses for exercise. I have managed to shed 10 pounds and it shows everywhere BUT my belly.......anyone have any tips?

  • My nutrition professor said that vigorous exercise helps. And if you do vigorous exercise you don't have to do it for hours either.
Apparently 1 minute of vigorous training = 2 minutes of moderate exercise.. so try and step it up.
That's what I have been doing.. and it helps a lot.. :)

keep losing, the first to come is the last to go you will get there.
  • For me - it's first on, last off.
That's usually the last place fat comes off for most people - that's why I'm always impressed when I see people with defined abs. You need to get pretty lean for the pooch to disappear. so, up that cardio, lift weights and fuel your body.

    Add some weights in there.

Cardio is great and all for losing fat, but weights is really where it's at. Muscle burns more calories than fat at rest.. which means you'll be burning more without even doing anything extra.

Do a google search for high intensity interval training, or HIIT

Also, you can't spot reduce, but in addition to performing HIIT, a clean diet is a must. Abs are made in the kitchen.

80% diet,10% strength training, 10% cardio (of the HIIT variety)

    Best of luck to you!

It will come off when it wants to.. there's no rhyme or reason to it, you lose all over, not part by part.

As Chalene Johnson says in Turbo Fire: the perfect abs start in the kitchen.

You cannot lose belly fat just from exercising. You can build abs from exercising, but nobody is going to see them if you aren't eating properly. Exercising can even help prevent the fat from getting bigger, but if you aren't eating right, it is unlikely you are going to get rid of that belly fat.

Glad it is not just me! I thought I was the only since I see all these pictures of folk with flat abds! I struggle with that too!

There's no real way to "spot train".. cardio cardio cardio. Keep doing it and you will lose weight all over. It sucks and isn't going to happen over night. Good luck.

What is your fiber intake? I have heard that fiber helps with belly fat. I have been getting 35 g of fiber a day since the beginning and I have had no trouble dropping belly fat.
  • I'll probably get a lot of BOOS for this one but I DID lose belly fat, and under my chin-

I cut out every drop of High Fructose Corn Syrup from my diet-
it's debatable, but it isn't something I NEED, so I'd decided I'd err on the "safe" side.
My hubby is losing his belly fat too- and he's not even TRYING to watch his weight-
he simply eats what I buy/cook. And he's not eating it either.

I also take Cinnamon supplements- which are good for blood sugar metabolism and burning fat.

So, that's my take on the subject......
I'm not advocating anything wacky ( at least I don't think so)
  • I have exactly the same problem so I appreciate all these replies. I have lost 16kgs but only 12 cm from my belly, which also seems that it will be the last to go.

Someone did also tell me...situps, pushups, and walking.

Cardio. I started walking daily for about an hour at 4 mph on a 3.5 incline and in a month I lost a pant size and lost a couple inches in my waist. If I could I would be running since thats even more effective than walking, I'm trying to start running a little and work my way up. I have also heard that healthy fats are great for losing belly fat, I eat an ounce of almonds daily. Avocados are also good. Also if you drink soda, limit your intake. I drank diet sida and noticed after I switched to water I wasn't nearly as bloated.

Great advice Samantha. I can do that. I have a treadmill, and also drink nearly a litre of diet coke per day, so I'll try both those ideas. Not sure if I can fit the avocados and almonds into my calories.

I had a big tummy (48") around when I was 12st 7 in June. I used sauna belt around waist when exercising so that part sweated more, I got some zaggora hot pants too. Then I went low carb and cut wheat and my belly seems to have dropped off.. gone down to 36" and my waist has also shrunk from 38" to 32 " and gone down 2 sizes from UK20-16 (nearly in 14's!.. couple more inches of tummy needed!)

I'm restricted exercise-wise due to physical disability but I wear wrist and ankle weights and a weighted balance belt around my middle (helps balance for standing exercises on wii) I can do boxercising from sitting for cardio and I use pilates floor exercises and some callantics and yoga exercises I can manage for the tummy toning.

Going low carb helps me keep calories down so I can make sure I get chance to burn more than I eat and this seems to be working for me... lost 27lbs so far

This doesn't work. In college I used to diligently do 1000 crunches every day, and it did absolutely nothing for me (my diet was pretty good as well, and I did plenty of cadio too). Losing belly fat is exceptionally difficult for most women. I've never figured out how to do it myself.
  • Its just how the body works. You will start losing weight from your extremities and the weight loss will only gradually reach your belly area after you've lost the majority of weight from your extremities. Its a real pain in the butt but you can't really do anything about it.
