The Rear View Mirror Principle

During the day a lot of thoughts and ideas come to me: "I want to have a fuzzy sock day. I want to lay in bed all day and read a book. I want to eat junk food. I want to watch movies that I haven't watched in a while. Exercise is too hard. Eating right sucks. A nap would be more fun than a stroll on the dreadmill." Last night, post workout, I read someone's status that they were trying to get up the enthusiam for a workout, but a nap sounded better. It struck me how often (Most minutes of every day) I have the same thoughts. But having already completed my workout for the day, I was able to honestly say, that although the idea of the nap is better going forward, the reality of the workout is way better in the rear view mirror. What do you want to see in your rear view mirror at the end of the day?

I'd like to be able to look back and know that I managed to fit in a swim before I started my day (this never happens!), see a tidy house (I have 2 young children), know that we have all eaten well before sitting down to relax for some quality time with my hubby ;0)0

Honestly, most days I am happy that I got out of bed, and made it through the work day, when all I want to do is sleep. All the time. But once I've managed to get up and work through the day, I can trick myself into making Pilates, mostly bc they're prepaid and super expensive at $98 / class -- gotta love NYC. If I could then manage some form of healthy snack that one could consider "dinner", then I'm super pleased. The latter really making me happy whilst glancing in the rear view...0

I'm just happy if I don't quit on my goals. If I miss a workout, I'm ok with that. If my diet is off, I'm ok with that... as long as those things didn't happen because I said "the hell with today". Since I'm a slippery slope kind of guy (good leads to more good, bad leads to more bad)... I generally build on previous "decisions"... a good workout will lead to good eating will lead to a good day will lead to more good days. But conversely, a bad decision leads to more bad. So if I skip my workout or I have a lousy meal, there's a good chance the rest of the day will only get worse, and it only snowballs from there.

Thanks for writing that! I am definatley the same way but hadn't put it into those terms. I tend to focus on how easily I am derailed without thinking about the snowball effect of my good choices.0 -
In my rearview I like to see my daily workout (I try to knock that out first thing). Also, if I've had a negative day in the workplace, I definitely like to leave that in the dust. :flowerforyou:0

In my rear view mirror today I would like to see that my good eating carried through the whole day.0
