I am very overweight weighing 271 pounds and 5' 5" and I was wondering do you think I may me able to benefit from the program? I have heard great things, but everyone i have talked to or saw using it were in the upper 100's low 200's. I have seen me do a great number of things that I had not been able to do in Spring and would love to challenge myself more, but i do not want to over do it. What are your thoughts? Do you think i should lose a little more before trying this out or just start trying and see how i do? I have arthritic knees, but since losing just the little I have so far they rarely bother me any more. TIA for any comments you may have!

If you are concerned if you should try it, I would check with your doctor and see what they say =]

If your doctor has cleared up for physical activity, give it a go. It's really as intense as you want to make it. You can modify any of the movements and listen to your body when you're doing something in a way you shouldn't.

I couldn't finish even the modified versions of Level 1 when I started and at the end I was doing all the advanced without stopping so don't be afraid to go at your own pace and you'll see results!

I think most have found that it's not a great weight loss/calorie burn (myself included) but more of a "toning/inches lost" thing. I would do something more cardio for now and do it very soon! Sounds to me like you are willing to work hard and will be where you need to be soon! :) What about some of the other biggest loser workouts? Bob Harper has several on the market (Biggest Loser Cardio Max is one I got at Wal-Mart) and you can do different levels on it. :) But, if you really just want to challenge yourself and do the Shred...go for it (with dr approval of course) and do your best! :) I would add in a nice walk or time on treadmill or elliptical though to see the pounds melt away. Good luck!

I started it at 220, 5'9". I only did level oen and the results were incredible. I'm getting ready to start again tonight and finish all of it but I reccomend it.

LET ME MAKE A SUGGESTION: 30 DS is very hard on your joints, especially as a bigger person. Jillian has stated taht it is NOT meant to be an everyday thing and I wouldn't do it that way. I did it 3-4 times a week onjust level one and 3 weeks of that, I had people commenting on the shape of my butt, arms etc.

Go for it but don't over-do it!
  • It's just cardio crossed with calisthenics: jumping jacks, faux skipping, squats, dumbbell presses, dumbbell flies, pushups, curls, situp (different kinds) and so on. There are modified pushups if needed and the weight of the dumbbell can be adjusted
  • Def check with your doctor but I say go for it! I just bought it myself and I am 290 (5'10") and tried it this very am about two hours ago. There are two options on the video 1. the Jillian way and 2. a modified option for beginners. So you essentially have two women completing the workout with you showing both options. DO WHAT YOU CAN! Trust me, I couldnt even do the modified version completely (i tried my darndest though) and believe you me, you will sweat and feel the burn. I feel great right now. Goooddd LUUCKKCKCKCKCKCKCKCKCK!

Of course you can do it. Jillian even says on the DVD "I have 400lb people doing jumping jacks. If they can, you can, too."

So go for it. Of course, don't start out too fast. She has two people behind her, a beginner level person and advanced. I would follow the beginner first and ease your way into it.

If you have been cleared for physical activity then go for it. They have someone doing modified exercises and you can modify or do less if you feel the need to do so. I did the whole thing using 20 oz Coke Zero bottles (weighing in at 1 lb 10 oz) instead of weights because I just couldn't do it yet.

At the beginning for me I couldn't do the 30 seconds of jumping jacks that's how out of shape I was and now that feels like nothing. But do it at your own pace and modify....I still do!!!
  • I watched the video this weekend (borrowed it from a friend) and everything looked pretty basic. Stuff I have been doing with my trainer from "haven't been to a gym in x # of years" day 1.. I would say, borrow a copy, or rent one and give it a shot for a week or so. Just stay at lvl 1 w/ the modified moves and move up as you feel comfortable. :)

Have you tried it? This is an intense series. I'm not sure why people feel this is for "just toning" or not hard.

Trust me, it is. I have run 5k's, 10k's and a half marathon and it's tough for me.

If you focus, and I mean really give it your all, it's as tough as anything you will do. And it works.
