My gym has a holiday Challenge: To row (on a rowing machine) 70,000 meters between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'm not much of a rower but am up for the challenge so today I tried to row but after 5 min my shins were already killing me. Does anyone have any recommendations....techniques, shoes (or no shoes) to wear, stretches...anything to get me through these 70,000 meters???? Thanks for any suggestions.

It sounds like you're pushing off on your toes. Try curling them back a bit and using your heels to push.
  • When you are on an erg, it's the same technique as on the water..

You start at the finish, where your legs are straight and your arms are pulled back.
Go, Arms fully forward, then lead your body forward, then slowly raise your knees but make sure your feet stay flat it the stretcher.
Then you reverse, pushing down on your legs, your body will follow then pull your arms in. This takes you to the catch, then the finish.
You want pressure on the legs and slow with bringing your knees up..

The rowing machine is my favorite piece of cardio equipment. It's a shame that isn't used more often. Your gym does seem to have a nice program for it though.
