Which is less bad for me?

Due to an unusual work schedule, I don't typically get home until 9pm or so. On one hand, I don't think I should eat that late at night, but on the other hand I'm usually WAY under my calorie goal.

Which should I do?

  • Why shouldn't you eat that late?
  • I'm a student and practically nocturnal due to exams coming up. I read an article, and it doesn't matter what time of day you eat at.

It's true, it doesn't matter when you eat. Your body does a lot of repair and work when you're asleep, it's not dead :)

    Time for some myth-busting!

The time of day/night you consume your cals doesn't matter. Check out the evidence: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/390149-should-i-eat-at-night

Eat at night. It will be okay.
  • It doesn't really matter how late you eat, as long as it's at least 2 hours before bedtime so you don't get reflux.

If you're hungry eat. It doesn't matter what time it occurs.

I agree with everyone else, I work 4pm till midnight. I generally don't eat until maybe 10pm. It's just how my work schedule goes....

I don't eat within a few hours of going to bed for the sole fact that I get heartburn if I do. Otherwise, it doesn't matter what time you eat, your body digests it the same whether its 10pm or 10am.

If you don't want to eat that late.... can you eat more during the day? IMO it doesn't matter when you eat - but you may feel awful going to bed on a full stomach.

Protein shake/bar on your commute home?

    Bigger breakfast?

What time do you go to sleep? There's no point NOT eating just because of the actual time of day either... if your bedtime is 3am, try stopping food 3 hours before (if you're subscribing to someone else's don't eat after a certain time method). What's the point in stopping food after 9pm if you only get up at 11am and spend the next 10 hours working??

eat!! no problems eating late. i personally don't love eating two hours before bed, but i'll do it if i don't have a choice. just be sensible about what you eat.
