Ok so when i am at the gym i always start by either doing the elliptical or the treadmill and i had a question.....what number do i log into MFP? do i log what MFP tells me i should have burned for the amount of time i did the exercise or do i use the numbers that the machine gives me. currently i am using the numbers that the machine gives me because at the start it asks for my current weight and age so Im guessing it knows what its doing, plus the MFP numbers are much more generous than that of the machine. now for every other exercise i do i use the MFP numbers. any help out there?? what do you guys do?? which is more reliable??

I would invest in a HRM for a more accurate number either way. I have not gotten one yet but, I generally use MFP. I do keep an eye on the machine numbers as well though but, I find them to be inaccurate ( like broken) too often to take them seriously. Stick to your diet and work out and it wont be a big deal. Also do some research on average cals burned for that exercise and your weight etc. It might give you a general number.
  • I know the equipment at the gym is always way off, because it's not set to your personal weight. I don't really use equipment, but from what I understand, most that do use a Heart Rate Monitor if they want accurate results.

Get yourself a Heart Rate Monitor with a chest strap and you'll know exactly what your burning

If you set your weight at the start the machine's readouts will be set to your specific weight.

I don't have an HRM, so I usually use MFP or Runkeeper estimations. Maybe MFP isn't entirely accurate, but it's worked out just fine for me, I've lot weight using these numbers (and eating back the cals!).

I also think the idea of checking online for a guide as to how many cals someone at your weight will burn for a particular exercise is a really useful guide. For example, I estimate that I burn about 10 cals/minute when I run at 5mph. So, if I'm on the elliptical and I feel I'm exerting about the same amount of energy that I do when I run, I check to see that the calories are close to 10cals/min.

If the machines ask you for your weight I would use their numbers.....
If you use the MFP numbers I would only eat back about 75% of your exercise calories
