Blood donation

If I donate a pint of blood, that would weigh about a pound, right? So how long would it take for my body to replace that pint of blood? I don't want to get on the scale a few days later and think "hey I lost a pound!" when it was just the blood. I know it doesn't really matter in the long run but I was just wondering.

    From the Red Cross website:
How long will it take to replenish the pint of blood I donate?
The plasma from your donation is replaced within about 24 hours. Red cells need about four to six weeks for complete replacement. That’s why at least eight weeks are required between whole blood donations.

I donate every 8 weeks like clock work and have NEVER noticed a difference on the scale. And I have done the weight before/after thing.

It's actually about 1.2lbs...most of which is water. Your body will use about 600 cal to replenish the blood cells, but that is over about a month.

Are you sure it isn't blood?

in order to replace the blood lost, the body need 650 calories. So try to eat a bit more.

If they take a pound of fluid from your body I'm pretty sure you have to weigh a pound less afterward. Then again that's only if you didn't eat or drink anything.

I think you're overthinking this way too much.

Don't weigh for a week. It will all average out.

I donate plasma every 3 weeks - and must honestly say I have never seen it reflect on the scales (but then I never really checked either)

I read on the Mayo Clinic's website that you burn about 650 calories in the 48 hours after donating, NOT over a period of a month. For this reason, I always record 325 calories burned the day of, and day after my donation.

I also donate about every 8 weeks and have never noticed a difference on the scale, but also have never checked.

Sorry but I hate being told I'm overthinking something every time I'm curious about anything. It really gets old.

Maybe it's because you're overthinking it. Perhaps. :drinker:

You have to admit that a lot of overthinking occurs here. If someone assumes a post is of an overthinking/overreacting nature, they will almost always be correct. You are an exception.

I don't think MrsCon40 meant anything negative or insulting by her post.

Well, at least in Canada, you cannot give blood more than once every 2 months. Because it takes 5-8 weeks to replenish those cells.

You seem to be thinking about this even more than I am. Is over overthinking possible?

Well, with the blood loss, wouldn't thinking be more difficult?
