Hi, I'm Olivia and I have NO arches whatsoever. I'd like to run, but my feet start killing me after 1.5 miles...
I know there are custom orthodics that can be made to fix this problem, but I don't have that kind of $$.
So has anyone used Dr. Scholls arch support insoles? Running is the cheapest way to exercise...and I feel so bummed that my feet don't allow me to.
Anyone have any other suggestions? Or similar problems?
Thanks,
Olivia :flowerforyou:

Getting orthotics was the best thing I have ever done, I no longer get cramps in my arches and my feet aren't killing me after a game of netball like they used to.
I know you said you don't have that kind of money, but I gotta say that they are well worth it.0 -
I have same problem. My feet are flat like Fred Flintstone. I wear nike sneakers bc they have built in arch support. I usr Dr. Schols in my flats and heels for work. They work great for me. Good luck.0

I have pretty flat feet and don't use orthotics. My feet don't hurt but I find high arches kind of uncomfortable. I got running sneakers at a specialized fitness store with some help, tried on a ton of shoes, currently wearing Saucony's, forget the cost but it was definitely under $100 (maybe $85 or so?). No problems with them. I used to wear New Balance a lot too.0

What can you afford right now? In Denver there's a running store called Runners Roost that takes a look at your running on treadmills and recommends shoes to your particular feet. They recently (and I believe regularly) have sales on items and even sell last years shoes for around $50 during sales. Which I think is pretty good for higher end running shoes. I just got a pair of newer shoes for $80 on sale. Not sure if there's a store like this where you're from.
I have flat feet, my weight is also pretty high and I've been diagnosed with Plantar fasciitis, so I feel your pain. I wish I was more familiar with the inserts, but it seems like sometimes they're almost as expensive as the shoes! Hope you find what you're looking for and keep it in budget!
Some of the stretches for plantar fasciitis I assume are pretty healthy all around, so perhaps conditioning your feet with stretching would also help with the pain..

Well I had orthodics when I was younger...and I just remember that they were uncomfortable :noway:
I'm willing to spend around $100 for a GOOD pair of shoes. Right now I have some sauconys...and like I said, I try not to run a lot or my feet feel like they are going to fall off. I've seen those commercials for Dr.Scholls machines where you can stand on it and it will tell you what kind of inserts to get...but I have yet to find a machine near me!
Thanks for the input!0 -
I have flat feet too. I wear Nikes and they're great. I run on the treadmill though. I used to get really bad shin splints just walking. I still get bad shin splints if I walk too fast BUT when I jog as long as I stay on the balls of my feet that it doesn't hurt. I don't know what your running technique is but if your heels are striking the ground then I recommend you start running on the balls of your feet and see what that does.0

I think on their website they have a page where you can just put in your zip code and see if there's any near you.0 -

Podiatrist told me to tape my feet. You need to place about 1 inch width cloth tape alongside your great toe, to your heel, anothe piece at your fith digit, to your heel, this is your base. Take at least 4 smaller pieces of tape and bridge them across the bottom of your foot, across your arch, above and below it. That takes the pressure off of the tendons in your foot and the roll of tape is cheap and it works. I can best describe it like you are making a ladder on your foot. Hope it helps.0

Hey, Olivia. Unfortunately, there's no equal substitute for custom orthotics for us flat-footers. Yes, they can be expensive, but your health insurance may cover much of them, and they last a long time. My orthotics are a decade old, and the podiatrist tells me they're just fine, although I did order a new pair recently thanks to extra $$ in my medical savings plan.
If they're truly out of the question, then a good running store may be able to help you. Look for one with a treadmill inside. If they don't have you running in shoes before you buy them, look for a better store.0
