Polar FT40 battery-type question - please help

I recently changed the battery in my wrist unit of my polar FT40 due to it showing low charge. Over the past couple of months, I'd noticed that I was not getting calorie count that I used to get for various exercises but I am quite fit, so figured that that was the reason.
Last night was the first night with the new battery and lo and behold, the calorie count was more or less back to where it had been a few months ago.
Can a low battery charge in either the wrist unit or the transmitter cause the watch to undercount calories? Not that I mind, all that much, but I'm just wondering.... It was quite significant. Activities that used to get me around 400 cals were only giving me about 250 before last night.
Read the manual but couldn't find any reference to this. Thanks for any insight!
