You Are What You Eat

Hello folks. A colleague of mine (Michelle Helmessy: The Athlete Factory) posted this on her fitness Blog and thought I would share it here. So many people seem to pay little if any attention to their food choices, focusing only on calorie counting and not calorie quality.
Your body can only produce cells based on the fuel you give it to work with. You ARE what you eat. See below for more!
“When big-name athletes are seduced by the dead smell of money to prostitute fat and sugar loaded candy bars as official foods of the Olympic Games, who the hell can you trust?” –Dr. Michael Colgan, Optimum Sports Nutrition, page 1.
This book was like a warm hug on an exceptionally emo day. Like its politics, North American food and agricultural associations have become much less about providing what’s best for the democratic public, and more about self-interest and turning a profit. This frustrates me beyond words, mainly because the general population does not have the knowledge or resources to know better, and that they’re putting their blind faith in large Corporations to help guide them to better health and getting stabbed in the back.
There are no quick fixes with nutrition.
The cells that make up your body thrive off what you put in it, and become made up of the things you ingest.
A blood cell lasts 60-120 days. In 6 months almost all the proteins in your body die and are replaced, even the DNA of your genes. In a year all your bones and even the enamel of your teeth is replaced, constructed entirely out of the nutrients that you eat.
So, when you find yourself pounding that Big Mac at 3am–drunkenly or sober– just remember that the cells and proteins within your body will be doing their jobs with the golden arches hindering them from working optimally.
That being said, quick fixes in your diet won’t show up for 6 months or longer. Fad diets do not work. If you want to change the way you feel and optimize how your body works to help you train and compete at your best, you have to work at your nutrition. And continue working at it.
I continually find it amazing that you can change the entire makeup of your body in just 6 months. Think about it.

I read your whole post, but all I can think about is that my first thought after reading the TITLE of your post is "Oh no... I had pistachio nuts for breakfast....." :laugh:0

He is right. A year ago, when I only ate veggies, lean meats and fruits FAITHFULLY. My skin was glowing, my energy was high and my weight was dropping like crazy. Guess what? i did not count calories at all and was able to eat alot more.

I agree. I can see how it gets confusing on here when there's so many ripped people eating whatever the heck they want. It makes me wonder, can I do that, too? Are they really still ripped? How the heck do I know! I don't! I know what works for me. Going to McD's every morning and for lunch during the work week over a period of time progressed into a hideous muffn top. Eating that way didn't motivate me to work out either. I have to eat clean and work out to have my body the way I want it. That's what works for me and that's the bottom line for me. I do indulge every now and then, but make it my priority to make my own bkfsts and lunch so I don't fall back into the abyss that is McDonalds. Thanks for this thread. We ARE what we eat. :happy:0

Nothing wrong with the nuts, except by themselves that's not a "sufficient" bkfst.
(edit) (LOL) I'm an airhead this morning! I took you too literally! I'm a NUT, too!0 -
Used this to talk myself out of the french fries I was craving. Because no, I don't think deep-fried BK french fries are the raw material I want to be giving my body to build with.0

I have definitely come to the realization that nutrition is the biggest factor in losing weight and getting toned. I have been working out religiously and diligently watching my nutrition. I never thought my nutrition was bad at all...however, I am not seeing the ripped stomach and defined arms I desire. I now know I have to adjust my nutrition by trying new things...reducing carbs? upping protein? Not sure what the answer is yet, but I will find out sooner or later!0
