When the cravings hit...

Since I've been trying to eat more healthily I have been besieged by awful cravings. I mean, ones where, to put it graphically, saliva will rush into my mouth at the very thought and I can't think of anything else but my stupid stomach until I have eaten something. It's usually bread nowadays because that's probably the only thing I buy now that doesn't have to be cooked, isn't fat free and isn't fruit and veg (I know myself too well!!!). If I had anything like crisps in supply in my house they'd be gone in two days..same with anything vaguely tasty and junky.
As I said in my first post I have a pretty bad relationship with food-I've been a vegetarian since I was eight (I'm 21 now) and have struggled to feel myself properly and feel full for a number of years-I'm apparently getting too much protein now and I assumed that may be the problem so that threw me a bit. I also used to comfort and boredom eat a lot, and some of that is still there. My self control is nonexistant so having a bit of something I like is not an option. Oddly, on other days I have to force myself to eat something in the day because I just don't feel like it, and that's a new thing.
I love exercise and being active, mostly because when I'm doing it and for a good few hours after I don't feel like I need to eat-I feel in control of my body. But after, even when I've just eaten I'll get cravings. Basically, what I wanted to know is does anybody/has anybody had a similar experience trying to change to better eating at the beginning of a lifestyle change and is there anything I can do when I'm getting a very strong desire to eat when I'm not hungry besides drinking water?

I eat light ice cream EVERY NIGHT. If I get cravings, I tell myself that I will getting my sweet fix later. Also, that is the last thing I eat. My body knows that after I eat the sweets, I am done, so I don't get too many cravings.0
