Have you run shorter distances before? Is this your first stab at running? I kinda need more information.
I'm a distance runner and when I started - I did the Couch to 5k program, then the Couch to 10k. Now I run half marathons. Worked for me! Good Luck!!!

I'm just getting ready to finish C25K next week, and my next run will be a 10 mile at the end of April...I have no idea what I'm doing, but I know I have to get my endurance up...so I guess that's where I'll start =)

I have run 5k's before and run shorter distances. I have the right shoes but I guess what I am not sure of is what should I be eating before the run and do you have some kind of energy drink half way through.

im in your shoes - ran 9.4 miles on my long run last week :( so close - what stopped me was not bringing gatorade to replenish carbs/electrolytes

I run 1 or 2 10Ks per year, Also, over the past few years I have run a 15K, 3 1/2 Marathons and 1 Marathon.

Starting from the 10K distance, I add a couple of minutes every couple runs until you get up to 10 miles. For the 1/2 and Marathon distances I follow a much more planned out running schedule that gradually increases weekly distances (and provides rest weeks).

I have a fuel belt (runniing belt that holds 6 oz bottles of liquid). I used to run with just water, but once you get past 1 1/2 hours (for me), you can burn up all carbs and bonk (feel dizzy, about to pass out). I now run exclusively with gatorade (frost... sits well on my tummy). I ususllay drink about 6 oz in 6-7 miles.

May I suggest http://www.halhigdon.com/ ? I used his site when I trained for my half marathon and I will be using it again for my full marathon training. It is wonderful. You can use it for a 5K, 10K, etc. Best of luck. Running is amazing.

Also, there are a lot of gels and shot bloks you can use for when you are running long runs. They help me with energy and the bloks for cramps. I don't like the ones for caffeine. I don't like to eat before my longs runs but that is me. You will have to trust your own body to see what it wants. I switch between water and Powerade, too.
