Spinning class at the YMCA

I have never done this before and am thinking of doing it at 9:00 this morning. I do the treadmill for around 90 minutes a day in different sets on inclines from 2 to 4. Yesterday afternoon I tried the eliptical and did 60 minutes non stop at the Y. I had a couple of compression fractures 6 years ago and am wondering if the standing up portion of the exercise will be too much for my back or if I will last an hour. I,m 50 and weigh 245.

Thanks in advance for any comments. I want to go but am uncertain if I should.

Thanks, Scott

DO IT. I loveeee YMCA spinning!

EDIT: You could always talk to the spinning instructor as well. I had a sprained ankle this summer, and my instructor had just recently gone through ankle surgery, so we both didn't do some of the certain exercises, but did something else, and still got a great workout!

I say go for it! You'll never know if you don't try it. Make sure you ask the instructor to help you set up your bike, and tell them about your prior injuries. This way they can make sure you're in the right position to not get hurt again! I love the YMCA.

I'm 53 and every time I go to spinning class I kick my own *kitten*! That's the best part you go at what you feel is a workout but just remember the more you work the more you burn!

I say give it a try. Remember, you can always modify, if there is something that hurts (not the work out soreness, but the injury pain) then don't do it. You can sit rather than stand, you can also lower/lessen the tension on most cycle/spin bikes....

I take spin classes as a regular part of my work out routine and LOVE them. Each instructor is a little different too.

    Good luck!

  • I do spinning twice a week at my YMCA and it is amazing. If you think it will hurt your back to stand then don't stand for a few classes. I didn't stand at all during my first class and I didn't stand every time they did for several classes after that! It's easy to modify so you don't hurt yourself. If you think you would like to try it then go for it!!

You are already quite active so you might enjoy a spinning class. I go to one at the YMCA on Saturday mornings. I am still waiting to become addicted to it. In other words...I am having to force myself to go. Not my thing BUT it does burn major calories.

i used to spin a lot at the Y. Loved it. I have neck and lower back issues. The great thing is you can go at your pace, sit when you need to, it took me several classes to be able to do it all without little breaks but it is really fun. I took off a lot of weight

Ok. Thanks... I'm going to make a protien shake now and head to the Y. I will do what I can and see how it goes. I'm open to trying new things but also don't want to make a fool out of myself. We shall see... Scott

Ok I did it. I could not stand the whole time but about 50% of the time and people in the class said I did real good. Glad I went and I am home with a soaking wet shirt now and a sore but...Those seats are small.
