NSV-Gluten Free

I'm pretty much obsessing over every little thing I put in my body this week. As of Monday, I started a gluten free diet. I've never been diagnosed with any kind of gluten intolerance, but neither my doctors, nor I have ever been able to figure out what's "not quite right" about my health. My doctor suggested this may be something I should try out.

For as long as I can remember, I've been an emotional eater--happy, sad, angry, lonely, excited, bored, etc. I just always craved food--typically sugary (especially chocolate) or even bread-based. My cravings were intense, and sometimes for no apparent reason--I'd sometimes wake up in the dead of night wishing I had toast or bowl of chocolate ice cream.

Anyway, starting Monday morning (yes, only 3 days ago), I went completely gluten free. Here's the NSV part--I haven't had any cravings...at all. Maybe it's just a honeymoon phase, but I'm seriously thrilled. I thought I'd be going nuts over not having my gluten-based products--not the case at all. I guess gluten and my body just can't play nice.

Not only that...there IS a little scale victory...I'm down 2 pounds!!!

  • I lost a massive amount of weight this summer after going gluten-free. It's a miracle! On and off the scale. I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to feel better and healthier and be thin forever.

I started a gluten-free diet last year after the Dr couldn't find anything "wrong" with me. Instead of replacing gluten foods, I just eliminated them for the most part because the alternatives were too expensive. Walmart does sell some GF pasta that's $3 or so per box. Otherwise stick with fruits, veggies, rice, potatoes, etc. I think I lost weight more just from cutting out the cookies & breaded items than anything else :)

Good luck - I hope this diet helps you feel better! I know it made a huge difference in just a week for me.

I totally agree! I have a wheat allergy (minor, causes skin rashes), so I went on a gluten free diet for a couple of years. Because almost everything sweet and sugary and easy to binge on contains wheat, I definitely lost weight (not sure how much because I wasn't counting then), and I seriously had no food cravings. Avoiding heavy carb foods and sugary foods allowed me to broaden my pallet and explore much more nutrient dense foods.

Actually, it's so funny to see your post because I just started my gluten-free diet this morning!! :) Best of luck to you!

So far it's been amazing...less headaches, my stomach isn't as upset, etc. Isn't it fun when your doctor says "there's nothing wrong with you" when you clearly know something's not right?

I'm finding comparably priced gluten-free alternatives (since I love baking I was really nervous about that). I'm glad to hear this is working well for you--hopefully it will for me too! :)

I have recently gone GF too. It is easier than I thought, but at the same time....hard! However, once I had all the gluten out of my system, I lost 10 pounds almost immediately and my bowel issues are so much better. I still have a way to go to be completely healthy, but this was a big hurdle. Thank you for posting the website. I need all the ideas I can get. :)

My daughter has been eating gluten free for 10 years and in trying to make sure she had all of the treats the other kids did, she put on weight, year after year...Both she and I joned mfp mid August, 2011 and have succeeded in dropping 40 lbs each. I think it is important to understand that simply eating gluten free is not the only piece to the puzzle. I am happy to be eating gluten free and excited that it is helping many feel better :)
