Hi all! I've been looking at all my nutrition intake levels and everyday i've only been getting 40% of the recommended iron intake. I don't eat much meat, and my main source of iron is cereal and bread, but i'm trying to reduce the carbs I eat. Does anyone have any recommendations and recipes that will help me meet (no pun intended) my iron requirements? Thank you!

    Iron rich foods:

    http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/top-10-iron-rich-foods

    Red meat
    Egg yolks
    Dark, leafy greens (spinach, collards)
    Dried fruit (prunes, raisins)
Iron-enriched cereals and grains (check the labels)
    Mollusks (oysters, clams, scallops)
    Turkey or chicken giblets
Beans, lentils, chick peas and soybeans
    Liver
    Artichokes

If you eat iron-rich foods along with foods that provide plenty of vitamin C, your body can better absorb the iron

Also try cooking in cast-iron cookware. You can increase the iron content of some foods 10x!

    ETA:

One of my favorite iron-rich side dishes is sauted spinach. I saute chopped shallots in a tbsp of olive oil in a cast iron pan, then add 4 c. of fresh spinach and 1/4 c. of golden raisins in the pan. Add a 1/2 c. of water and put the lid on the pan just until the spinach wilts. Sprinkle with 1/4 c. toasted pine nuts.

I have read that Spinach must be cooked in order to get the iron from it. When it is raw, there is another chemical in there that binds the iron and you don't get any of it. I read this years ago and can not remember the website.
  • I have the same problem. I tried to give blood a few days ago and they wouldn't let me because my iron levels were too low.

I eat a lot of kidney beans and spinach but MFP dosn't seem to register them as having any iron content when I put them in my diary...

Also can anyone reccomend any multi-vits plus iron tablets?
