Calorie Counting Question

I hope this doesn't seem like a stupid question. If a dish has 1,000 calories and I only eat half, does that mean I only ate 500 calories? Or is there 1,000 calories in each serving? My husband is taking me out to dinner tonight but I don't know how to figure out my calorie count. Any help would be great. Thanks!

If you got the 1000 calories number from a restaurant's website, then it means that particular entree is 1000 calories.

If you eat half, it is roughly 500, yes.

The number of calories in an entry is the number of calories per serving. The serving size varies, though: in some cases, it will be for the whole dish, in other cases just half a cup. For each entry, the serving size is specified, and usually, there is also some indication of how many servings per "container" or dish. For "cashew chicken", for instance, there are several entries in the database. The first entry, "Cashew Chicken (Thai Restaurant)", suggests a serving size of 2 cups for 441 calories. If I only eat 1 cup, that;s 220 calories. Another entry is for "Chicken & Cashew Nut Stir Fry", estimated to be 152 calories per 155g serve. When I check the serving size, I see that one container is considered to be 3 serves - so if I have half the dish, I need to enter 1.5 serves, for 227 calories.
