I've done a bit of open water-- and it IS different. A lot has to do with the water body, so find out about WHERE you'll be swimming.

I typically used a combination of about freestyle for speed and efficiency, and heads-up breast stroke for navigation (e.g., siting on destination or target), with the actual stroke count depending on water conditions. For example, in very choppy conditions, I would do, say, 12 strokes freestyle to 2-3 breast--since in very choppy water it's harder to keep the water from smacking you in the face while breast stroking. In cloudier water, I will do more breast stroke to be sure I'm staying on target-- say 8 free to 3 breast.

Good fitting goggles are a must, and check to find out what the water temperature is and whether you'll need a wetsuit.

    Good luck!
