Is 1200 ok?

Hi,
Im a little confused about what my cals should be...worried that increasing it a bit will make me gain weight.....one site says I should be eating 1550 a day.......does that should right? At the moment im doing 1200 as the basic "start up" amount it allocated me.
Lately my weight changes slightly but overall is still in the same range as always
Im also looking for some friends as encouragment and support is a mutual and helpful part of this site Feel free to add me

Find out your BMR, and eat at that.0

I am set at 1200 which is the minimum. You are suppose to eat back all the calories you burn during workouts because if you go under 1200 it says you are in starvation mode.0

If you don't have much left to lose then slow down the weight loss a bit or you'll just be risking a plateau or gimped metabolism. 1200 is said to be the bare minimum a person can survive on; however, from what I've read: the fatter you are, the higher your deficit can be.
If you really want to eat 1200 net then go for it, if you plateau then eat a bit more0 -
I eat 1,290 but I eat all excercise calories so while I net about that I eat about 1,500 a day.0

How tall are you? How much do you weigh? Do you lead an active or sedentary life? (These are all rhetorical questions- for you, not for me).
My personal opinion on weight loss is that you should find out what you "burn" on average every day, subtract a maximum of 500 calories from that, and eat that.
So for me... I burn on average 2100 calories per day... so the lowest I'd go is 1600 calories per day. I'm actually eating a little higher... but that's a different story.0 -

I eat 1200 ish and exercise and don't eat back my exercise calories. It works for me. This site already calcs what you need. Don't over think it, go with what is working and what you are comfortable with.0

MFp has me set at 1570 to lose 2 pounds a week. I made my goal 1200. I went to the nutritionist the other day and she set me at 1000. I always thought it wasnt healthy to go that low but she told em to try it for a month and see what happens. I am very heavy, morbidly obese, and she told me she wants to see a 4 or 5 pound weight loss per week from me. Everything I have ever been told, tells me this is a bad idea and very very wrong. But I am taking her advice and see what happens. Also she told me I should never eat back my exercise calories, told me I am defeating the purpose of exercising0

Doctors will use this method for morbidly obese people to start....but it usually does not go longer than 6-8 weeks at this very low calorie diet. It is to be used with caution....so your questioning of if is quite justified. If you feel uncomfortable with what the nutritionist is asking you to do, then seek a professional second opinion. It is your life and your body....you should feel 100% confident in what you are doing!0 -

If she has mentioned what the goal loss is during this period (though it doesn't sound like time span was mentioned), and you do your part and hold to it, and she is way off, I'd fire her.0 -

Way I do it my dietitian told me is to look at it this way
As a female you don't wanna eat less than 1200 a day
As a male you don't wanna eat less than 1800 a day
Always burn more than you consume for great weight loss
Your body will always have a certain amount a day you will burn just sitting on your butt
For example my body alone is roughly 1600 a day just sitting around doing nothing
I consume around 1200-1400 a day
Low carb is key, heavier carbs in the morning
Whole grains (keep u fuller longer) fresh fruit and veggies and lean meats
Personally I do red meat and taters 2x a week
Remember the heavier you are the more calories you will burn and the smaller you get the harder it gets but we can't let that get us down
Like example I gained 195lbs when I quit smoking, I was 135 when I graduated almost 12yrs ago, quit smoking gained weight but didn't get on track til March 2009 when my docs got on my case saying they didn't want me to have a kid til I was at a good weight, October 2010 I lost 156lbs then came stress of buying selling houses, now after my slack phase im back on track in the last month I lost almost 6 lbs
I been trying to burn a extra 500-1200 cals a day on top of the 1600 cals and everything else, one thing im trying to watch is sodium and carbs, not trying to burn 4000+ like I was last year a day cause my doc said if im trying to have a baby at the sametime don't over do it just do what I can
we can do this
Just remember burn more than you eat just don't consume under 1200 cals as long as ur getting 1200 and plenty of water your good (1800 for a guy)
Muscle weighs more than fat, muscle burns more fat
3500 cals to put ON a lb
3500 burned cals to take OFF a lb
Don't eat less than those carb intakes or your body will go into starvation mode and store everything
