Unless you're a guy and have lots of testosterone, you won't bulk up like a guy anyway.

Erm, can anyone actually answer the question without being rude to the OP?

First and foremost, you can't spot reduce and you can't stop the jiggle without muscle (and sorry to say, but muscle when relaxed jiggles a bit too, just less like jell-o).

Second, 1.5 pound weights belong in a toddler's hands, not an adult's. You won't get any kind of conditioning in muscles (which you need to reduce wobble) unless you tire them out. Grab 5 or 10 at a minimum, a bag of sugar weighs this much and you'd get more use out of lifting that than you will with those tiny weights.

Basically, you need to do motions over your head to clear out the back sides of your arms and shoulders. Think of playing with a 4 year old, pick the kid up, lift her over your head, bring her down and hug her then press her back up. Keep going til you feel fatigue in your arms. If you can do this with a toddler, congrats, you've just done overhead presses with a 25 pound weight!

Please note that while I respect your desire to appear feminine, I do fully believe that if you do 100 tricep extensions with 1.5 lbs, you aren't going to get fatigue which means you aren't going to make progress and therefore meet your goal. 5-10 pounds will be a good start, but you may end up need 15 or more to see progress. And please don't worry about getting large muscles with those weights. It just won't happen. :)

While I agree on the lift heavy advice, she said "1.5kg" weights which is close to 3.5 lbs.

hey lauriey IMO, the best for weight loss and toning is HIIT training, do as many reps as you can as fast as you can for 30 sec rest for 15 sec. but change it up a little (not just arms)

also nikki is right, girls have min testosterone, so they dont bulk up like men do (unless they cheat), so you dont have to worry about getting bulky

hope this helps....BTW google - high intensity interval training (HIIT)

I think HIIT and weights is your best bet. Nerfitness.com has some good stuff. Actually building muscle is very very difficult for women and requires eating at a calories surpluses and takes months. You can even lift heavy weights and you won't build muscle - just make your current muscle stronger. I like to lift and do HIIT stuff 5 days a week, but when I started off I did 3 days a week and saw some results.

If you way tone arms (and as said you can't spot reduce) you'll have to continue losing fat all over. The
"tone" look you're describing is created bc having strong muscle with little body fat covering it. It can take awhile, especially as you get close to the end. For me the belly is the first place I put on and last I lose. It sucks- I think I have several months to go still. Stick with good clean eating and exercise.

(ps- nerd fitness also gives some body weight strength training too. I'd personally recommend that over the very small weights!)

I want muscles, cause I am human. And a girl one, at that.

Put down the itty bitty weights, pick up some real weight, and have at it.

You will NOT get big, bulky, bodybuilder type arms picking up heavy stuff and putting it back down. You will, on the other hand, lose body fat and get toned.

I agree with what everyone has said...also, you will not *gain* muscle in a caloric deficit. It just will not happen. You have to strength train to maintain what muscle you do have, so that when the fat comes off, you have nice toned muscles to show.

Female bodybuilders look *that* muscular because they work REALLY hard on it. Avoiding lifting weights because you don't want to look like them is akin to saying you don't want to lose weight because you don't want to look like Kate Moss.

It takes a lot more than recreational lifting to look like a bodybuilder, and a lot more than a calorie deficit to look like Kate Moss.

That said, I do about a 30 minute circuit of various weight machines - upper body, lower body and core - twice a week. Typically two or three sets of 10-15 reps. Three or four times a week, I run between 3 and 7 miles.

As mentioned above, you would have to have mass quantities of testosterone, human growth hormones, or steroids to end up looking awkwardly bulky.

A while back, while I was curling 20 pound dumbbells at the gym, an early/mid-30s women (maybe 5' 3") with a well-toned, very nice, and very feminine physique walked up, grabbed a set of 25 pound dumbbells, and started pounding out curls with great form. I was astonished with how much she was lifting in proportion to her lack of bulk. Even during the curls her biceps weren't bulging out of her skin or anything. The number of reps she did per set indicated to me that she could have been lifting more. Whenever I see her on the StairMaster or whatever, I'm still amazed at what this well-toned, but very average looking (size) woman can do physically. Yes, one can look at her body and clearly see that fitness is important to her, but it is very attractive, and not unnatural looking in the slightest.

I can only tell you my experience, I lift nothing below 20-30 pounds dumbbells and 90 pounds barbbells. My arm are toning up nicely and was able to lose 1/2 inch at my bicep. No bulking happening.

My purse weight more then 3 pounds....and really I can hold it all day long, it never had an impact on how my arms look.

    Good luck

Best post yet! When you throw in my kindle, my kids DSis, digital camera and camcorder (to capture every waking moment of said kids), iphone, etc....I think my purse weights about 10 lbs! I would love to bulk up....I know a six-pack is in there under all that flab!

it was a good question with many very good answers. I work out on weight machines with 50 lbs weight because I am used to lifting a 40 lb kid and a 60 lbs kid a lot. I am not bulking but getting very strong. I don't care if I get bulky muscles as it has to be better than the fat. But since I have been doing this, I have been starving. Now I understand more why. Thanks for asking the question and thanks for the answers. Ya'll rock.

Won't happen on calorie deficit. And using those weights won't do much to "tone up" your arms eight. Gotta stress them with resistance for low reps.

"...as many reps as you can as fast as you can.." is a no no. A 1 or 2 second count rep, with smooth form or else.

Massive muscles on women involve chemical trickery unless they are extreme genetic outliers (or have gender reassignment).

Little weights at high reps do nothing for you if you actually want to improve muscle strength. You cannot increase muscle mass on a caloric deficit and I'm guessing you're a 1.200 calorie eater. So to gain strength and reduce flab you need to make your muscles work. 1.5k probably weighs less than your purse - so if it were effective you wouldn't have flabby arms now.
