I have to vent...are they any other apartment dwellers out there? How do you handle an upstairs neighbor with absolutely ZERO consideration for you as the downstairs neighbor? My upstairs neighbor is awful...I've lived below families with small children & that was like having an empty apartment above me in comparison. Last night was the second time in as many months that my neighbor has made enough noise to wake the dead worldwide. We're talking jumping up & down as hard as she could, slamming doors repeatedly, having her dog run lap after lap, stomping as loudly as possible throughout her apartment, etc. And this went on from the time we walked in the door around 6pm until midnight...then it started AGAIN @ 3am & kept up for a least an hour (when my alarm went off). I am running on fumes today because this person either can't comprehend the fact that we hear EVERY damn step she takes or just plain doesn't care.
I get the people keep different schedules...and I also understand that noise like footsteps, etc. comes with living in apartment. But this is ridiculous...she really tries to come through the ceiling at ALL hours. Has anyone else dealt with something similar?? I'm ready to stab myself in the eye right now...
End of rant...thanks for listening.

Stomping? Is she getting you back for a wild party last weekend or loud music in the early morning? It sounds like she's doing it intentionally or you just found your new workout buddy. Is she new or just new behavior?0

I don't have wild parties...I have 2 kids (10 & 7) and they play @ home. I purposely asked for a ground floor apartment when we moved in so they could play without disturbing people. They aren't loud or anything. And I try to keep the noise (play time, TV's, radios, etc) to a minimum because I know how sound carries in apartments. And really it's more that she walks as heavily as she can with no regard to the fact that we can hear every step. Ordinarily, I don't care about that...I mean you can't tell someone they can't walk around in their own home...that's just ridiculous. But when all of that continues on past midnight into the wee hours of the morning it's more than just irritating...it makes sleep impossible. Even ear plugs don't help (I've tried).0 -
I'm pretty sure I had your neighbors in my last apartment. It sounds like retalliation for something. Have you mentioned to them about how noisy they are? I tried that and it only got worse. I went to the management company and that didn't help, it only got worse. I left my apartment a few times because of the noise and slept elsewhere. I resorted to calling the police to file complaints. It took 6 months of living in hell before the management company finally evicted them. It was horrible. Sorry you are dealing with it. You could be noisy during their sleep time, give them a dose of their own medicine.0

My husband and I used to live in a downstairs apartment and I swear the teenager boy upstairs wore cement boots! We talked to his mom and he was fine while she was home, but while she was gone he was so awful! He did something on several occasions that would make our toilet and tub back up and we caught him selling drugs on two occasions. So decided that it was time for us to move. Perhaps you could talk to your upstairs neighbor, it doesn't hurt to ask, or make an anonymous complaint to the landlord.0

I have talked to her before...about a month ago, round about 1:30 in the morning, when I couldn't take the noise anymore, I went up & talked to her. She was *kitten*-faced as were the 2 friends she had over. Things got better for a little while after that; but last night was hideous. I did talk to management the last time; but I never filed a formal complaint because she was very nice about the whole thing & I was trying to be nice in return. I don't know if someone else mentioned something about noise and she thought it was me; but you're right...last night really sounded like she was trying to make a point about something. I was on the verge of calling the cops as well...but we'll see what my apt complex has to say today. I dropped off written complaints about the first incident; another incident and last night's fiasco.0

It sounds like you are a very kind woman and trying your best to be respectful. Obviously she is not as empathetic or caring as you, thus I think it is time to file the formal complaint ^^
It sounds like she is not just causing problems for you, but probably your growing children...I am not sure if the complaints you drops off recently are formal or not, but I am sorry you are dealing with this.
I had a roommate last semester who would practice dribbling at 2 am...my ex boyfriend went crazy and started banging on her door and basically told her to stop it...she never did it again, but I do not think that is the best way of handling the situation if you do not appear threatening ^^
All the best~0 -

1st, you complain to the apt office IN WRITING. Then, if it continues, followup with the office, again IN WRITING, and make sure that they have rec'd your 1st complaint. If it still continues, ask for the name of the management company and call whoever it is that is over the apt buildings. I promise you, something will eventually be done about it.
I have recently had horrible neighbors and they were finally threatened with eviction if they didn't stop. It was noise and the b**** thought it was perfectly ok to use my balcony as her own personal ashtray...was NOT happy!
I am sorry that you are dealing with this, but make sure that your point gets across and it will eventually get taken care of.0 -
I'd give her a free pass this time, but if it happens again, I'd make a formal complaint.

Can you report them to the landlord or something or make a complaint? Not sure what can be done about it though. I live on the 2nd floor but there's a 3rd floor above me. Most of the apartment is carpet and that tends to muffle any footsteps, but whenever I'm below right where the kitchen should be ( hard floor ) I can hear footsteps pretty easily but they're still not all that loud, thankfully.0

yep- you're going to have to get documentation. Record the noise, duration etc. If you can get the cops over & they hear it too & make a written report the apt management SHOULD follow up.
however- IF you talk to this person & that doesn't help, THIS is what I'd do: I'd knock on her door (well, ok pound) at midnight and when she answers say 'I can't sleep cause of all the noise up here so I'm coming to hang out here. I've decided you're lonely and need company whenever I can't sleep- we're gonna be BEST FRIENDS every single night from now on"0 -

I agree with this. maybe even a duplex. Where I live you can get a HUGE duplex for the same price as a decent sized apartment. I would consider looking into that option than you get the best of both worlds =]0 -

LMFAO! It's so funny you say that because when I went up there @ 1:30am, she was all "I've never met you...how are you doing?" I have tried recording the noise; but I don't have a video camera & my phone doesn't pick up the noise. I dropped of a written complaint this morning & spoke with the manager. They are giving her a written noise complaint notice and if there is retaliation tonight & I complain again, she'll be evicted. I don't want to get anyone kicked out; but on the flip side I don't want to be stuck getting 3 hours of sleep a night because someone gets her panties in a wad...0 -

Lol love this. I had a neighbor who had regular loud... Intimate encounters, all night long, woke my baby and everything. I was so tempted to pop some popcorn and grab a folding lawnchair, go knock on her door and say, "I can already hear everything going on, so I figured I should come watch too, to get the full effect."
Or applaud loudly and give the guy a rating, "good job, sounds like a 7, but try harder next time, the last guy was a 9" lol0 -
Move! I've got a house for sale, but you'd have to come to NW Ohio.
It's cheap!
Move in ready!0
