Many people seem to find success with the MPF standard ratios, so there is nothing wrong with using them. I do not follow the MFP guidelines, but that is because I know that my body processes fats and protein much, much more healthily than it processes carbohydrates. I adjust accordingly, and it works for me.

Good guidelines for people who need to be careful with carbs can be found in the "slow carb" diet in The 4-Hour Body by Tim Ferris as well as the "paleo" diet.

i'll check out the books that MJ recommended but for the Metabolic Research diet, the ratio is 60% protein, 20% fat and 20% carb

I do not try to stick to a set ratio so much as an eating style. I avoid all grains and starchy vegetables and try to limit my "sweet" vegetables, like rutabagas, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes. I get almost all of my carbs from beans and vegetables. I tr y to keep my protein up to at least 150g a day, if not higher.

In the end, my calorie ratios are ending up at roughly 20% carbs, 40% fat, and 40% protein. Each day varies, but the pie chart looks very similar.
