any training to help achieve this?

I can do 3-4 sets of 10 pull ups (front grip) and hit my upper chest at the top for most of them. But I don't know how to get over the top. At 43, too late?

I can't do it, but then I can't do more than one chin-up without assistance and no pull-ups without assistance. It is never too late, but you need to build up your strength a lot before you do something like that.

I've gotten stronger on the pullups. I do them even on my off lift days as plyos. I do front/reverse grips.

I've progressed up to 75lb dumbells for the rows (3 sets of 8).

Can do my weight 178lbs in the machine pull downs.

I can't, but this is one of my long term goals! I have a love/hate relationship with the gymnastic ring work. I always have to scale stuff down if it's a muscle up. Haha - we actually keep a record on the board at my box of the people who have done muscle ups and what their consecutive count on (and we aren't THAT competitive of a gym - this is literally the ONLY thing we keep a running record of. They are just THAT impressive haha)

I think it just takes a lot of work on MANY muscle groups - it is such an intense move that uses so much of your body!

I WILL do one of these.

From what I can tell, the initial motion takes alot of lat strength, then shoulder strength. Not to mention grip and wrist conditioning.

I've never seen these before...I bet if you keep training you can do it! I never thought I'd be doing pull ups at 34 and I do many types. Wide, over, under and narrow grip. I use a bench under my foot for balance and so I can reach the bar and never use muscles in my legs to help with them. I also do pull ups from laying on my back....those are the hardest for me....

Good luck. I know you can do it...

That is the other problem I have. If I did this on my inside bar I would put my head and shoulders through the ceiling. That is why I built and outdoor bar. Problem is now it is winter I won't be using it for 4-5 months.

Also, I've never seen them done on a stationary bar, only free hanging gymnastic rings

I like the first link because the movement is slow and controlled... he's not throwing his weight around or using his lower body to generate momentum.

The cross fit ones allow a more dynamic movement.

Considering how damned hard these are, I'd take em' any way I could for now.

    Would doing dips help?

It's all good. Once you power up and over the bar, you have to finish the move. Which would entail some triceps but IMHO, if you can get to THAT point, you're 95% there arleady!

I'm a bit surprised we didn't have any takers on that either! And yeah, I can see how it would be a lot tougher without the kipping business! But I agree that I'd be thrilled to get one either way

Someone shared this with me this morning though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2q8KMnWUsvg#t=17s

    I've got a new goal. :)

Apparently there's a bit of technique to it, it's not all strength. Here's a nice tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fpk1a_PxEw4&feature=youtube_gdata_player

We worked on strict (no kipping) muscle ups on the rings today! Whoa, baby - some tough stuff!

    Oh something new to try....

If I hadn't sliced my hand open yesterday with scissors I'd go give this a try right now.

I saw a guy doing these in the gym when I was in college and decided to give them a try.

I can do them, and they are incredibly taxing on the arm muscles...but they disrupt the flow of the rest of my workout.

    Still they're impressive looking!

can't see vid ( at work) but if they are what i think then convict conditioning shows you how to do them, it would help if you can do 1 arm pull ups/ chins up, when i say do them i mean like 4 sets of 20 odd. Otherwise i'd work towards that goal :)

I can get where I can hit my shoulders on the bar but I can't do pullups as easily as those guys.

Dang, those are awesome... and the girl is my new hero!
I still can't wait for the day that I can do a single pull-up, but I've got some tonage to drop.
