Comfort Eating

Stress is probably one of the biggest factors in why I over eat. Im on day three of my diet and here comes the stress. This always seems to be the pattern, I do well for a few days then something stressful happens and there goes the diet. I'm hanging in there right now but would love to hear from someone who has figured out how to overcome this.

  • I'm right there with you. I start and stop constantly. For me it isn't even stress, it's boredom. The only way other people understand is if I tell them it's an addiction. Like how people know they shouldn't smoke, but then find themselves doing it anyway. I know I shouldn't randomly snack on things but then I'm in the fridge poking around.

My girlfriend has been a wonderful support system for me recently. Once I explained my motivations for eating, she's been able to suggest other things to keep my mind straight. I also recommend writing in a journal. When you are stressed and feel the urge to eat, sit down and write about it instead. Not just about the stress, but also the food urges and everything. You may find that relief enough to skip the eating.

Plan a snack ahead of time that you can just grab when the stress hits. If you have a healthy snack ready to go you will do better.
  • keep a lot of low calorie munchy snacks nearby. I keep fiber 1 (100cal) bars in my car so that I don't do the drivethru or stop for a bag of chips. In my cupboard I keep special k crisps (2 are 100 cals), bags of 100 cal popcorn, fruit twists (60 cals each) and in the fridge I always have hummus and carrots/celery ready to go. Even if you overdo it on the hummus, the cals aren't that bad and there's protein so it's satisfying. Also crackers (wheat thins) and laughing cow light cheese is a great salty/crunchy/creamy snack that feels naughty.

I'm a snacker and I won't change, but I have changed what I snack ON.

I'm also a stress eater. Trying to replace it with tea or lipton cup-a-soup (50 cals!) Both liquids are filling and warm = comfort. :)
