I wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem with there current weight loss. When I was at my heaviest weight I had to move around a lot for comfort when sleeping but was able to sleep fairly well.. I have lost close to 50 pds now and for the past few weeks I have been woken up by numbness in my arms and hands. It goes away when I move my arm around or rub my arms and hands but it happens multiple times as night and It has never happened to me when I was heavier so I was wondering if any one else has had this happen to them? Thank you for any and all responses.

  • are you sleeping on your side. I once passed out on my couch and woke up with a number arm and hand along the side closest to my pinky finger. i spoke to my doctor about it. It happens alot to drunks who pass out due to being intoxicated. What happens is the nerve gets squished and it stays number for a few days. My doctor said you can fix a spliced nerve, but nerve damage is worse when a nerve gets squished as it cannot be repaired. No worries just change the way you are sleeping..im assuming you are sleeping on your side. I would still talk to your doctor about it

You lost padding! When you relax while sleeping you put pressure on different nerve points and blood vessels, some of those points have lost padding. I often wake up with numb or tingling arms/hands/shoulders because of they way I am positioned. Most often it happens when I sleep on my stomach with an arm under the pillow under my head, or when I sleep fully on my shoulder instead of half stomach half side. I have been using a pillow to kind of prop me up so I am not fully on my stomach or fully on my side and it seems to be working.

The padding part makes sense I will try your tips and see if that works and if not I will be seeing the doctor just want to make sure everything is ok. Thanks :)

Low thyroid is a cause of carpal tunnel syndrome, so seeing the doctor is a good idea. It's possible you are more comfortable lying on your side now that you have lost weight, and as you probably breathe better that way, you're spending more time in that position now.
  • I wake up with numb arms almost every night it bugs me too, I believe I am sleeping on my arms and usually roll on my back. It bothers me for sure!

When we got a new fairly hard mattress [which I LOVE for my back), my husband had a problem with numbness in his arms, so we bought a memory foam topper to put on top of the mattress. It made all the difference-- still have the firmness of the hard mattress, but that memory foam topper cushions his bony little elbows so no more numbness.
