the moderation justification dodge

I am not an expert.
I am not telling you what to eat or what not to eat.
I am not judging what you do eat or do not eat.
I have been around here a bit and have learned a great deal and have read some crazy and whacky stuff.
The “it’s ok if you do it in moderation” philosophy is good most of the time but not ALL of the time.
If you are here, you most likely are trying to improve your health through weight loss and possibly through exercise as well. Me too.
Often we will read posts that someone feels deprived because he or she feels they cant eat some obviously crappy food or drink. Often the response is “it’s ok if you do it in moderation”.
If you are dedicated to achieving the best possible result, you will not want to eat something that is obviously crappy. But we are human and we want what we want. Me too.
The problem is for the poster who is wavering a bit to be told it’s ok if you do it in moderation. It really isnt ok. Putting crappy stuff in our body is not ok. But! And I say but, I am not telling you not to eat it. Go ahead and eat it but do it knowing there is a cost, even if you do it moderately.
Make an informed decision. Don’t eat crap just because someone says you can do it in moderation. Crap is crap. If you want to eat it, go ahead. But do it honestly even though moderately.:drinker:

Assuming you're talking figuratively and not literally, what is crap and what will happen if I eat crap in moderation?0

good assumption. yes, figuratively. and I bet you know what I am talking about. U want debate or chance to lock and load? HA0 -
I only eat free-range crap. It's organic.0

ahh...then you are safe! go forth and moderate at will.0 -
I suspect that definition of "crap" varies from person to person. I don't eat meat, so whether it's grass fed organic beef or a fast food burger - it's crap to me.0

Just trying to get you to elaborate some. Many months ago I was a bit of clean eating advocate, but more recently I'm more of an "if it fits your macros" advocate. Just curious what you think the penalty is for eating, say, fast food, or pizza, or whatever else you would classify as crap, here and there (aka "in moderation").0 -

oh...well...some pizza can actually be fantastically clean and healthy...I am talking about crap like cool whip (chemicals parading as food) and crap like diet coke...I dont want to debate diet coke again...but it has no redeeming value from a stirct nutrition angle...so I guess I mean calories that do not contribute to anything other than our taste buds0 -

You forgot water in the list of foods with no nutritional value.0 -
I agree to what you have said, but I am one of those who says "I can eat everything in moderation". That doesn't mean I can eat a pizza every single day or other things, but if I eat a slice of pizza once in a while (not talking about weekly either) it is ok for me, because I won't feel like "missing out" on something and then messing up everything I have achieved again.
I skipped eating all kind of candy in 2000. 8,5 years later I started eating them again and did totally go over board, because I tried to find comfort in food. BAD CHOICE...So I think doing it like some others, eating a piece of chocolate once in a while instead of not for such a long time and then all of a sudden all of it again is a better choice0 -

If people suddenly shift to only stuff that is 100% valuable, they tend to get frustrated and quit. Very few people do well with cold turkey, and those that do are mystified by the behavior of those that don't.
You may consider food "crap" if there are better alternatives, another person will consider it crap if it is empty calories, another may consider it crap if it is overpriced diet versions of things that are bad for you in the first place, another may only feel the need to avoid things with trans fats or mercury that accumulate over time, etc. Everyone is on a journey, and their definitions of what they want to put in their mouths will hopefully be gradually refined over time -- IF they stick with it long enough. Very few foods are literally poisonous even in moderation.0 -

I don't like the phrase "anything in moderation" myself. I agree that it can seriously lead someone astray (if they have food issues to begin with). What is moderation? It's simply less than before. Does that mean a greasy cheeseburger every other day instead of everyday? Who knows?
I prefer the phrase "anything occasionally". To me, the word "occasionally" implies having treats infrequently or with a long period of time between episodes. In my world, it means I'm on my food plan 90% of the time with the occasional treat thrown in so I don't get bored and quit. In that sense, i haven't really cut any foods out of my diet.
ETA: I'm also in the calling a spade a spade camp. Crap food is crap food, and I think we all know what that means. No sense is sugarcoating it so someone can feel a little better about that Big Mac.0 -
If you are dedicated to achieving the best possible result, you will not want to eat something that is obviously crappy.
The point is I, and i suspect many others, don't want to go for 100% healthy and cut out all the nice stuff. I'd rather just be 90% healthier and still eat some "crap", than be 100% healthy, and just eat rabbit food the rest of my life.0 -

good grief! who said anything about rabbit food? not me...I eat steak...drink real milk...eat full fat cheese...dont twist and add...geeesh

See, "crap" is relative.
To me, full fat cheese is "crap". Full fat milk is just a waste of calories.
Anyone with self control can have their crap in moderation. It will NOT do any harm. As long as they hit their macros and create that calorie deficit, it wont hurt! Plus, it's more than likely that having said crap will make it easier for them to stay on track, rather than falling off and binging.0 -
(First post, bear with me....)
Garbage in garbage out.
There is plenty of information to tell us what "garbage in" means. Alcohol, coffee, caffeine, harmful drugs; overly processed foods; we know the list which seems to be growing.
The body and spirit are inseparably connected. To me "garbage out" means physical and spiritual well-being are diminished to the extent that we allow anything unhealthy to enter our bodies.
Now if I can just lose my last 35 pounds I can be at that state of spiritual and physical well-being I am looking for.0 -

the original point of this post was to say if you want to eat some crap then eat it but dont hide behind the excuse that only eating it in moderation makes it ok...we are weak..we eat crap sometimes...even me0

I like my junkie stuff in moderation.
I think of it like clothes shopping. Some people are ok with owning only the basics, and never want anything trendy. Blue jeans, button down shirts, classics that never go out of style.
I like mostly classics - I'm mostly a jeans & t-shirt kinda girl - but sometimes I want something flashy and fun. It makes me happy. A wardrobe of nothing but sequins and satin isn't practical for most normal people, but that doesn't mean there's no room in my closet for a pair of red patent leather stilettos. As long as most of what I wear fits my lifestyle, a few trendy splurges are fine as long as they don't break the bank. And as long as most of what I eat is healthy, a few yummy splurges are fine as long as they don't break my caloric bank.0 -

Ok, how about this. I'm explicitly saying that it's ok. I'm not hiding behind any excuses. It IS ok. It has nothing to do with being weak. It has everything to do with living life.0 -

Back to my first reply to this thread - why do you think it's not ok? Not being sarcastic at all (I know, this is rare for me).0 -

back to the original premise of this thread then...good...ok.......putting crap in our body to satisfy not an optimal macro input but rather to satisfy a learned response to our taste buds is not ok...I admit I do it...ooops door bell0 -

So it's not ok to consume (some vaguely defined notion of) "crap", because it's not ok. It's not ok because you said so.
K, thanks. Was just making sure.0 -
