Wow! I just finished watching The Biggest Loser: Family on the Style Network and needless to say I was totally shocked when the Blue team revealed Bob's weightloss tactic. Females should consum between 1000 - 1200 calories a day and exercise 2 or more hours 6 - 7 days a week?

Can anyone explain to me how this is healthy?

I really dont know but I agree with the 1200. it all depends on who it is and what they need to lose. a heavier person would think they were starving if they had that few. Just worry about calories in and calories out. always burn more than you consume.

I do the 1200 a day and at first it was hard, but now i can meet it and not be hungry at all, not saying i never go over but for the most part i'm at it.....now for the exercising i don't really do a whole lot anymore but even when i was working out i was only doing 3 days a week an hour and a half a time....can't see doing as much as he is talking about doing, seems like a good way to get burnt out!!

It's not "healthy" but it is doctor supervised and they have meals prepared for them so they get the proper nutrition. Looking at the exercises they do it doesn't seem to be high impact stuff. When I started it took me 75 min to walk 2 miles on the treadmill.

That's weird, because his book stresses that you HAVE to eat at LEAST 1200 calories a day.
  • a short time? How short of a time? How long does it take to lose 74 pounds?

I've been eating between 1600 and 1700 a day and exercising a little over an hour a day. I've got 3 weeks of practicing maintaining weight loss because I lost 1 pound in that time. I'm still 2 pounds ( 1 week) ahead of my goal. :drinker: I can feel some muscle definition too!:glasses:

Eating only 1200 calories is a difficult task.:grumble: Working out every day for 7 weeks has been rough too. :grumble: You should see my blisters from my recent hike and I'm sore too:sad:

I'm sticking with it. I'm going to reduce my calories to 1400 -1500 and keep working out. I'm planning another hike as soon as my blisters heal.

I'm in it for the long haul --until I fit into my size 10 clothes--however long it takes!

I stay within 1200-1400 calories per day and work out mainly all cardio 60min-2hrs daily...I also take a multivitamin and I dont eat after 6pm......My doctor actually put me on a 1000 calorie diet because I have a fatty liver *non alcoholic* But Im doing well with the 1200 so I have stuck to that.I havent been hungry but Im really careful to ONLY include high in fiber foods and foods that provide the best nutrition..I stay away from empty calories because they will leave you hungry at the end of the day...perhaps they have fatty liver who knows ....but 1000 calories is pretty low..
  • Ugh, Idk. I was at 1200 cals a day and burning about 200 cals a day and I wasn't losing anything. Once I upped it to 1285 (my BMR) I started losing again.

  • I lost 80lbs in the last year eating 1800-2200 calories a day. I cannot imagine only eating 1200. I would go insane. Another thing I can't understand is people who ONLY do cardio. Hasn't anyone heard of the "skinny fat?"

I know I would not survive on 1000-1200 calories a day either. I have had 1500 today and I am still hungry. I need to go work out so I can eat more.

    THANK YOU.

The BL people are at such a great risk from their morbid obesity that it's more important to lose the weight than it is to maintain muscle mass or a fully functioning metabolism. I have never eaten 1200 calories a day, and I don't ever plan to. I am eating around 2,000 calories a day and other people are commenting on my physique. I look better now than I did when I weighed a lb less and was eating 1400 calories a day last year.

I agree Songbyrd. If you are under 1200 net calories per day (calories eaten-calories burned), then you are at risk of putting your body into starvation mode. When this happens, your body hoards the calories you consume, and you will plateau or stall. Many people are scared to do it, but if you've stalled weight loss, and can't figure out why, take a good look at your food diary, and consider UPPING your calories. A small amount will be enough to rev the fire again (200-300) calories. You'll probably find that you have more energy and will also be able to bring more intensity with your workouts instead of bonking halfway through. Don't be afraid to up the calories a bit!
