Can anybody swear by the Total Gym?

I live in a small town and we don't have much in the way of gyms, the ones we do have are way too expensive. So I've promised myself that I would buy one peice of exercise equipment early next year. I don't have a lot of space and I want something that is a) a lot less than $500, b) able to fit in a relatively small amount of space when in use, and c) capable of being stored away. So that deadens bikes, and treadmills...I also thought the total gym would be nice so my fiance can get his "workout on."
Does anyone have any reviews for the total gym? or any other suggestions with my 3 criterias?

I have the top model (xls) of the total gym, with ab crunch and Pilates additions and love it! Not only do I use it, but my parents when they are here visiting and my kids too - literally great for anyone! Beginners get a great workout, as do intermediate - advanced to, but more for in between workouts for them. It's super effective and I have reshaped a TON since I got mine. I bought it back at the beginning of July and it gets a TON of use. If you are thinking about it and will stick with it, then it's worth the investment. The exercises transition easy, keeps the heart rate up the whole time you are doing it, and you feel great after each use. The part I have found to be the best is that I can do an intermediate workout, but my daughter who has terrible joints also is able to use it with minimal modifications. Any other questions, just ask Our whole family loves ours0

the only at home equipment I have are some free weights of different sizes and resistance bands. I have a bunch of dvds as well. check out walmart's website here, they have tons of stuff so you can get an idea for what's available.

AHAHA! That was exactly what I was thinking! I'm pretty darn good with the potty mouth too! :bigsmile:0 -
I LOVE my total gym but it's HUGE and you need room all around it, AND a pain in the butt to fold up. Not sure if that helps0

Yes! The Total Gym is not a small piece of equipment. Mine took up more space than my treadmill. It does fold, but not easily.0 -
I use a TotalGym. I bought it over 10 years ago. I bought an 11000 model on Ebay. It was a sports clinic model. I wanted to buy something I thought would stand up over time. It has done well but I have had to upgrade the stock wheel on the sled to a more sturdy type. I am adding free weights to the sled and I am pushing the total weight on it up to 300 lbs.
For a few years I was using the TotalGym wrong. Then I found a website called TotalGymWorkout.Com and used the online trainer there to design my workouts around my goals. It works but it is a paid subscription service. To me it is worth it. If I decide to change my workout to more cardio and less strength, it does all the figuring for me. If I want to add muscle mass or maintain, same thing. It tracks my progress and modifies my workouts to match my performance.
I would suggest you consider upgrading your model if you can. I strongly recommend the website at least to get you started right as you learn to used the equipment.0 -
Yeah. I used one for a while when my parents had it before they sold it on Craigslist. Apparently, I was the only one using it and they couldn't afford to keep it. Lame. It worked great but nothing a resistance band or weights at the gym couldn't give you.0

I just bought the Total Gym XLS today. I'm recovering from a serious foot injury (calcaneous fracture) and thought it would be a great low impact way to get back into shape.0
