Giving up..

Hi..
I need someone to tell me not to give up. I moved to Australia and went from having a very active job (approx 15.000 steps/day) to doing basicly doing nothing. Not a big surprise what happend. I gained 3 kg the first 1,5 months. Came to a land full of fries and Salt&vinegar chips.. Im fine with that, realizing what I did wrong.

I decided to break the bad habit. I joined a gym. I exercise at least 5 days a week. Usually upper body weights/lower body weights + about 40-50 min crosstrainer. I do at least 3 1 hour power walks a week. I also try and go swimming (1,5km) at least once a week.
I started doing 1300 kcal/day usually eating most of my calories back. Been doing that for about 2,5 months. I eat good food and no junk food. Lots of chicken, veggies, high fibre, cottage cheese and so on. I do eat some chocolate a day, but always inside the 1300 kcal. I usually have one day a week where I eat what I want but I know I stay below 2000 kcal and its never hight fat junk food.

But here is why Im giving up..
I gained another 4 kg... And before you say use a measure tape, I´ve done that. The cm keeps adding too..
Never done this much exercise in my life. Eating well. Sleeping well.
And Im fatter than I ever been in my life..
Help..

Hang in there and don't give up. Exercise machines grossly overestimate the amount of calories burned - so don't go by that. There's been a lot of studies that prove they tell you what you want to hear. Also, as my doctor said, weights are great, but they don't get your heart rate up and keep it there. Cardio combined with weights is the only way to go. Workout and workout hard (though don't overdo it ;) ). Finally, most people underestimate the amount of calories they eat. Be totally completely honest with yourself about what you are putting in your mouth. I log everything on my plate before I eat it so I don't accidentally forget something. Finally, make sure you eating good fruits and veg and lean protein.

Finally, don't give up! If what you are doing isn't working, try tweaking it. I found out that wheat and I aren't the best of friends. I swear if I eat wheat after lunch, I gain 3 lbs - probably water weight. So I've stopped eating wheat after breakfast and I've just seen the weight come off. Keep trying different things until you find something that sticks. It's not about a diet, but a healthy lifestyle that gives you a body you can live in.

    Dont give up!

It sounds like theres more going on.Maybe a health condition?

Iv also been putting on weight while exercising regular and eating well. Ive come to the conclusion its because of medication im on - looked it up and weight gain is a common side affect

It might be a good idea to see your doctor. It seems like your doing all the right thing.
Keep it up, keep fighting x

I agree, don't give up and the first thing to do in my opinion is talk to your dr. Maybe you have issues with your thyroid. Once that is ruled out change it up a bit if you eat back your excersize calories try not doing that. Cuz like the poster before we over estimate what we eat and machines are not accurate with calorie burn. Cardio is great too! When I log my food I over estimate what I think i ate. Cuz I don't have a weigh my food, so if it's the size of a deck of cards 4 oz then I log 5oz also when I log excersize if I did 45 minutes of elliptical I only log 30 minutes. And I very rarely eat any of my calories back. except on my rest day. Just keep going and go to the dr to make sure your blood work is all in line. then you will know for sure it's you doing something off. Keep your head up. :)
  • Don't give up! I've been on Weight Watchers for 1 1/2 years and only lost 25 pounds! I'd been stuck on a plateau since last February losing and gaining the same 5 pounds! I found this site and it is helping me so much! What I found is that I was exercising alot and not eating enough calories! I don't know what to tell you to do but don't give up! Think where you will be 6 months from now and how much weight you will have gained by then! I also take medication that causes weight gain so my doctor was very happy I'd lost weight and lowered my cholesterol!

I was just about to make my own topic when I found this one because my story is pretty similar. I eat between 1000-1400 calories most days, depending on how hungry I am. I eat almost completely good foods, although also I usually slip one day a week (usually Fridays where I eat more around 2000 or so calories). It's also the day I eat some cookies or pizza or something. I also exercise every day. On the Fridays, usually no more than about 200-400 calories. During the week, anywhere from 800-1500. Even taking into account what was previously said about overestimating what is worked off and underestimating what is eaten, my net is usually way less than 1200 (no, I'm not starving myself). Yet, in literally two days, I gained 2 pounds. No, I didn't weigh myself right after I'd eaten - I did it at the normal time about 7 hours after I ate. I really just want to throw up my hands in quit. I work harder than literally anybody I know in person and keep to a strict diet (minus Fridays) and yet I continually gain (despite what my icon says that's weight I'm trying to lose that I put on in a 3 month time). This is extraordinary frusterating, and I often don't see the point of wasting my time on it. However.....my suggestion to you, from standing in a pretty similiar position is 1) see a doctor, get some bloodwork done and see if there are any medical conditions contributing to it and 2) don't give up. Easier said than done? Yes. But still don't give up. This is a battle against yourself. Win it.

Do more cardio, swim more often, and don't eat all of your calories back. Bank them up for your day off, and track your food intake even then. Buy a pedometer, and make sure you get in your 10,000 steps per day.
  • Thanks for all the quick reply´s and the support!!
Going to try and answer some of your questions. I went to cooking school for 4 years doing a lot of nutrition classes during that time so I do log my food correctly and using a scale to weight up the food. I log the excersises here, not using the amount the machine at the the gym tells me.
Im starting to think it might be a thyfoid (not sure its the correct word) thing. But maybe Im looking for an excuse for my total failure.
I dont log the weight excersise at all. Just the cardio. Im usually on a 120-130 heart rate trying to go up and down a bit during the workout.. I only eat wheat at breakfast and I´ve never had a problem with it in the past. I stopped eating bread every day like i used to. I dont eat much pasta mainly because I tend to over eat it. And I dont eat any medication at all.
I do like that I finally doing lots of excersise but it drives me nuts that Im not loosing any cm´s.
So keep it up and see the doctor then?
  • Check with your doctor about your thyroid or some other medical problem. If thats not it maybe your body needs you to eat more calories. If you body thinks its in starvation mode its going to hold on to everything it gets. You could try something like Jillian Micheals 30 Day Shred or follow some other specific program to see if you need more guidance. Swimming, aquatic aerobics, running, and other cardio activites might be needed to burn more calories for longer periods of time 45-60mins at a timer. You can also try more interval type cardio or burst training where you go all out for a minute and at a lower exertion rate for 3 mins. Are you drinking enough water? I don't know what other suggestions to offer but don't give up. Things will get better!

    Don't give up

but just check with the doctor to make sure all is good.

Each of us has a point where we need that little push to keep us going.
But remember each day that you stay on course is another victory

remember your body is changing a little each day with what you are doing
it might now show it right away but it will show up
    so
    celebrate the little wins

and soon they will be big wins

Definately see a doctor. Although just because it's so hard doesn't mean there is something medically wrong with you, but it's something you need to check since it's a good possibility. And even if there's nothing wrong, maybe your doctor can suggest something different. The low-calorie, good-exercise thing doesn't work for everybody.

One thing to think about - and although it's slightly depressing - is that even if working so hard isn't making you lose, NOT working so hard will make you gain!
