Hi! I just joined MFP and am really excited about it. I would love to chat, swap stories and support and find support with other singles. I'm 41, no kids and working my butt off to get in shape and out in the world. I've got about 70 lbs to lose and even though I am doing well with exercise, eat really healthy, I am struggling with my portion control.
:flowerforyou: Looking forward to hearing from others!

Hi and welcome! I'm not a single, but I did start out with about as much to lose as you have. POrtion control gets easier with practice, trust me. Try starting meals with a bowl of soup or a low-cal, leafy salad. Those foods will fill you up without adding a lot of calories to your day. Even chugging a glass of water before a meal helps me, it puts something into your tummy, so you don't feel quite so ravenous when you begin eating. :flowerforyou: Best of luck to you, we are all here for you :drinker:0

welcome....portion control was a big eye popper for me........I bought a decent scale and several measuing cups and such and now it is almost second nature to grab the scale or a 1/2 cup dealie. I could not beleive the portion size for cereal...who are they kidding....before starting I was eating 7-9 portions of what I thought was a normal serving....have fun...get a scale, etc0

Thanks everyone! I do love how this site has sooo many of the Trader Joe's foods in the database. Makes things so easy. I measured my cereal for the first time today. I like to mix cereals (Kashi GoLean and Barbara's shredded Spoonfuls). Not too bad... added in some ground flax seed and some blueberries. Yum!
I did a pretty good job a few years back on Weight Watchers... but then changed jobs (I'm a teacher) and for some reason, fell off the wagon. Now I put my money into personal training and feel great.. but the weight isn't coming off as I'd like it. Must be those damn portions!!
This week, better measuring. I should probably read the directions with the digital scale I have??!!!

Fitness Chick: Thanks!! Great to hear about a teacher support group. I could really use that. I don't see the link in your post though. Did I miss something???
I'll search for it, but might need some help.

OMG...oops:blushing: Sorry Holly, I actually did go on the hunt for it last night and found it then came back to post it for you, and ah...well, somehow forgot to paste it in !

Hey Fitness Chic:
I feel your pain. I too am single... I have a boyfriend but I don't see him very often so I might as well be single. I too have issues with portion control. I have found salads and foods high in fiber help me feel full. I have also tried to slow down when eating. If you stop and wait 20 minutes before you finish your meal, you will find you may not want to complete it all. Another thing that has been a huge help is when you start to feel full... cover your plate with a napkin. If you can't see it you can't pick at it. Another trick at. restaurants is to get a to go box when you get your food and go ahead and box up half of it.. Not that easy to do, but you can eat the rest for another meal. Good Luck!

Hey Shannan...very cool tricks to share for Holly:flowerforyou:
I didn't mean to get you mixed up on who had posted, I was merely sharing a teachers support group link with Holly:happy:

Thanks for the great ideas!!! I am a speed eater. It's a huge problem for me. I've tried to slow down and there are times I put the fork, (or the chopsticks) down in between bites. I love eating with chopsticks! I slow down a lot and really have to think about how I'm eating. I also really try to focus on finishing a bite before I get the next one ready. Sometimes it's just like marathon.
Tonight I took a KILLER circuit class and got plenty hot and sweaty!!! Was SOOO hard but felt great.
Thanks for great ideas and support!!!

I have the same problems. I had 700 calories for breakfast and lunch and then went and had a 1500 calore supper... I was miserable. I like the chopstick idea. I'll have to try that.
I am trying to cut way back on the alcohol intake since it is full of empty calories. I can drink some serious beer and wine!

Hi all! Thought I"d try to revive this topic. I took a long break from MFP and now am back again. I'm particularly looking for support from other singles, without kids, who just prepare meals for themselves. I've got plenty of time to work out, and even have a membership at a nice gym... however after work each day (I'm a teacher), I play the "should I? shouldn't I? game".
Any other singles out there looking for buddy support? BTW... I am 42 and live in Los Angeles.
