I usually do something light like a piece of fruit or a Slim Fast or Special K meal bar. These bars can provide a nice amount of protein and fiber, which is good for energy. I am no expert, but I hope this helps.

A banana works best for me, but something around 100-150 cals should do the trick. I find that I can lift heavier and better if I have a little something to eat. Then make sure to eat some good carb/ protein when you're done to refuel!

I am no expert but before weights
I do three to four hours before I try for a carb like oatmeal with peanut butter and some whey protein..if I only have one hour maybe a half a banana
the after weight meal is also very important..I do a whey shake with fast carb like fruit or sugar type carb

I agree with the after meal for sure. You should definitely have some good protein within 30 minutes of working out, especially if you are lifting weights. GNC has this whey protein powder with digestive enzymes, which is helpful for first time protein powder users. It is also very tasty, at least the vanilla is, I haven't tried the chocolate yet. It is Wheybolic Extreme 60. HTH.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I also make sure i eat right afterwards and always make sure there is protien. I have been eating a banana about 30min-hour before my workouts but i wasn't sure if that was enough or if i should be eating something else.

I love this site, thanks for all the suggestions.:flowerforyou:

It's not what you eat right before a workout, but several hours before. Digestion creeps to almost a halt while you're working out because of changes in the nervous system, so what you just ate sort of 'hangs out' until you're done exercising. But the meal from 3+ hours ago has begun absorption into the blood stream. That doesn't mean you shouldn't eat before--it can help prevent hunger which can be distracting--but focus more on the earlier meals and the meal directly after your workout, which should include a carbohydrate and a protein, but little fat. If you're going to eat right before you work out, it's a good idea to avoid fat or too many carbohydrates then as they can cause GI distress.
