I have Kroger or Safeway's store brand... I mix in some cheese and herbs to give it a little more flavor... It's awesome and I love it's nutty taste!!0

Try preparing it this way: Saute one cup dried long grain brown rice in 1 teas. sesame oil. When rice turns brown, add 2 cups vegetable stock or chicken stock. Bring to a boil, cover, cook on low heat approx 50 minutes- maybe less where you are- I am at 6700 ft.0

Instead of plain white rice, move to white basmati rice. It has a wonderful aroma and IMO find it better than plain white rice. For brown rice add chicken stock and vegetable stock add spices and cook. I won't eat white rice unless I have to, but love the basmati rice. Smells like popcorn when it is cooking.
^^This, for sure. I adore basmati rice.0 -
I'd say give it another try definitely, maybe even mixing it with white rice as was suggested, and use stock and seasoning if you're gonna eat it on its own.
Personally I never really liked white rice in the first place (I thought it had no taste, it was just something to accompany whatever meat/sauce I had), but since I started eating brown rice I've found that I'm enjoying the rice itself too and need less meat/sauce to go with it, even on its own if cooked with stock / seasoning.
I had a bigger problem switching to wholewheat pasta, I ate a LOT of pasta at the time and the first couple of times I tried wholewheat I hated it and gave up, but I decided to try again some time later, and stuck with it, and now I like it just as much as normal pasta and if given the choice, I'll always go for wholewheat.0 -
I like Trader Joes organic brown rice, it's in the frozen section.. just microwave for 3 minutes and it's prepared just right! Taste wonderful.0

Not sure where you're located but trader joes has so good brown rice. I couldn't stand the stuff but after trying there's I could hang with it lol
I second this. I used to hate brown rice, and it also takes a freaking long time to cook on the stovetop, but someone told me about Trader Joe's frozen brown rice and it is actually really tasty. Plus it's super quick to make - 3 min in the microwave in the bag. You can get it in the freexer section at TJ's.

I cook my brown rice with lentils. The lentils take a little longer so I'll boil them for a little while first then throw the rice in there, add a little bit of soup seasoning, cover and let simmer for 20 minutes.
It tastes great and the soup seasoning takes away the cardboard-ish flavor. You can add a little bit of chicken or vegetable broth to it also while it's cooking.
But I do agree with the previous posters. If you just don't like brown rice then you don't have to eat it!0 -
Lunenburg brown rice. I like it's mild, nutty flavour. I don't eat as much brown rice with a meal as I do white rice as the brown rice is really filling. I don't use instant rice, but use an Asian rice cooker with a lid that fastens down tightly. You need to add more water to brown rice than white rice when cooking it...experiment to get the right consistency. It tastes fine.
I also like this brand. As a matter of fact I didn't like brown rice at all until I tried this brand. It's worth a try.0 -
I think brown basmati or jasmine rice tastes much better than just plan brown rice. However, I would never eat brown rice plain. I put some salt and butter in it when I have it as a side dish. Sometimes I'll mix it with wild rice and cook it in bullion/broth to make a pilaf. Sometimes I'll just use it a base for stir fries.0

Rice is our staple food. I have been eating white rice all my life. A few years ago my husband started eating brown rice. I tried and hated it. We used to eat Mahatma brand brown long grain rice (from Walmart) which I hated. He continued to eat it. later I found the Brown Basmati rice from an Indian store which was better. We also tried Quinoa. Both Brown basmati rice and Quinoa caused IBS with 2 or 3 trips a day to the loo. Ditched Quinoa because cooking it in a rice cooker made a mess on the countertops when the water/quinoa granules overflowed. I was at Costco recently and found an organic brand Brown long grain rice. Tastes better, easy on the stomach with fewer bathroom trips. My husband felt the brown basmati smelt of pesticides and was the cause of IBS. You can cook any rice in a rice cooker. Depending upon the age of the rice which you find out by trial and error, aged rice need more water and vice versa. Usually one cup rice needs two cups of water. Same for quinoa but watch out for spills.0

definitely eat BROWN RICE over white rice! not only does white rice have a higher glycemic index and all its essential nutrients removed when PROCESSED for it to cook easier.. but brown rice is CLEAN eating. awesome awesome source of magnesium, manganese, vitamins B1, B2 etc.. if you don't believe me, do a simple google search on its benefits vs. the white rice. its hands-down much more beneficial to our health.
Lundbergs Organic Brown Rice is fantastic. i use it with my rice cooker and it comes out to perfection!
GI is mostly irrelevant to the avg person
and guess what brown rice may contain things that actually lower the absorption of various minerals int he body making it worse then white rice
Comparison of the nutritional value between brown rice and white rice
Callegaro Mda D, Tirapegui J. Arq Gastroenterol. 1996 Oct-Dec;33(4):225-31.
Cereals are considered an important source of nutrients both in human and animal nourishment. In this paper nutritional value of brown rice is compared to that of white rice in relation to nutrients. Results show that despite higher nutrients contents of brown rice compared to white rice, experimental data does not provide evidence that the brown rice diet is better than the diet based on white rice. Possible antinutritional factors present in brown rice have adverse effects on bioavailability of this cereal nutrients.

Effects of brown rice on apparent digestibility and balance of nutrients in young men on low protein diets
J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo). 1987 Jun;33(3):207-18. .Miyoshi H, Okuda T, Okuda K, Koishi H.
The effect of brown rice with low protein intake was studied in five healthy young men. Feces were weighed, the digestibility of nutrients was determined, and blood tests were made. Each subject followed a diet consisting mainly of polished rice for 14 days and one consisting mainly of brown rice for 8 days. Both diets contained 0.5 g protein per kg of body weight. The brown rice diet had 3 times as much dietary fiber as the polished rice diet. On the brown rice diet, fecal weight increased, and apparent digestibility of energy, protein, and fat decreased, as did the absorption rates of Na, K, and P. The nitrogen balance was negative on both diets, but more negative on the brown rice diet. The phosphorus balance on the brown rice diet was significantly negative, but other minerals were not affected by the diet. The levels of cholesterol and minerals in the plasma were not significantly different on the polished rice diet and the brown rice diet. Comparing these results with data on standard protein intake (Miyoshi, H. et al (1986) J. Nutr. Sci. Vitaminol., 32, 581-589.), we concluded that brown rice reduced protein digestibility and nitrogen balance.

Thank you for posting this. I just can't seem to develop a taste for brown rice. I prefer to eat a little less white rice than to try to choke down brown rice. I always kind of felt bad about that and just avoided rice when I could. This was interesting to read...I guess I won't avoid it as much as I have before!0
