Keeping sugar in check

I'm following a 1200 calorie plan, and the recommended sugar intake is 24 grams. I'm having a lot of trouble keeping sugar at or below that, even though I'm eating healthy foods. I don't drink anything with sugar in it, and I've already switched to no sugar added products (like peanut butter). I've even cut out dairy because it's so high in sugar. My main sugar offenders currently seem to be sweet potatoes (10 grams), pears (16 grams), and whole wheat English muffins (6 grams).

Is anyone else having trouble keeping sugar in check? Any tips or suggestions? Favorite low-sugar fruits and veggies? Especially concerning fruit, how can I keep sugar low enough without cutting fruit out?

Thanks in advance!

I had the same problem when I first joined MFP back in July and was driving myself batty trying to stay under 24 grams. Then, I read several articles from respected nutritionists and doctors stating that the 24 grams wasn't set in stone as long as most of a person's total sugar intake is from natural sources such as fresh fruits. Now, I eat an average of 2-3 fruits a day, gave up regular yogurt for non-fat, plain Greek yogurt or Stoneyfield Greek Yogurt (lower in sugar) and do not drink any fruit juices or sugar-sweetened drinks.

One of my favorite low-sugar snacks is Jacobsen's Blueberry Snack Toast (only three grams of sugar). When I eat peanut butter, I opt for Bee's Knees Peanut Butter with Honey and only eat one teaspoon per serving. I have my plain Greek yogurt with a teaspoon of Smucker's Caramel Sundae Fat-Free syrup (I can control the amount of added sugar that way).

    Good luck!
