Weekends Kill Me!

Don't get me wrong, I love when the weekend is here! However, I know I could lose more weight more quickly if I could stick to my regular routines on the weekend. My husband is home though, and he likes to go out to eat usually once, but sometimes twice in a weekend. It's hard to eat out and stick to your diet, especially when we go to his favorite restaurants, one of which is a mexican restaurant that has no low fat food on their menu. Then, we like to have a drink or two with our meal, which adds on the calories quickly. My willpower is just not strong enough to resist all of this. I enjoy the time out too much to just say NO! I've been dieting since New Year's and I have lost 11 pounds (just one pound since joining this site), but my goal is to lose another 20 pounds by summer vacation. I need some advice and/or encouragement to keep from gaining a pound or two back each weekend! I've been stuck at this weight for two weeks and I want to get things moving again! :frown:

Weekends are TOUGH! But I find I'm alot more active on the weekends. I may eat a little more, but I try not to beat myself up over it.
It's good you have a goal. I'm just trying to be healthy every day and I think mexican is a treat ! I don't stuff myself. . I enjoy every slow-chewing, tasty morsel of my mexican meal. . . which is usually fajitas with no tortilla. I like beer. . . but seldom drink alcohol with my meals. .. ALWAYS WATER . . . just a good habit to get into. I feel I digest my food better if I only drink water with my meals. Then I might enjoy the taste of a beer after the meal.
I hope this helps !! You're not alone. . . you're one of the many of us who have to survive weekends ! LOL It's all in how you approach it, I guess.0 -
Weekends are tough. I completely understand.
If I may make a couple of suggestions that helped me a great deal?
First of all, start your morning at the gym and give yourself a couple of hours to be there. Take some time to work out, sit in the steam room with a conditioning treatment on your hair or a facial mask, and reflect on your goals.
Next, eat at home before you go out to eat with your husband. Arriving at a restaurant hungry is just like grocery shopping hungry. You get much more than you really need. Arrive at a restaurant already full and your chances of being satisfied with a salad, or smaller meal goes up exponentially.
Add some tobasco to your meals....because it takes the brain 20 minutes to realize that you are full, the tobasco speeds this process up with your brain and you will naturally eat less.
Okay - I've lived in Texas for almost 12 years now, and I have yet to find many healthy choices. I asked for a salad once and I got shredded taco lettuce with diced tomatoes on top. For this I would refer you back to the eat before you go concept. OR plan your meal before you leave.
Hope this helps!0 -
Sometimes weekends are tough, especially the days I'm not working. On those days, I try to get up and at least get moving, whether it be taking a walk or going to the mall and wandering around window shopping. Either way, as long as I get moving, I feel I'm not totally slacking off.0

I agree with what firewalking said...
I really really try to hit the gym first thing Saturday morning and burn 600+ calories.. this give me a 'cushion' for the day and I know I can splurge a little here and there... :drinker:
On Sundays, I try and fit in a jog or a walk at some point in the day to help offset anything I eat then.. it doesn't always happen, but it helps...
The real thing to keep in mind is consistency.. if you mess up once and a while it won't derail everything you've done... just like the Turtle, slow and steady wins the race...
Good luck to you! :flowerforyou:0 -

Weekends are only as tough as you make them...allow yourself the time to eat if you cant resist however you need to ditch 1/2 of the plate before you even sit down ...and also possibly split the drink with your hubby..make a point not to eat anything that you do not have the nutritional intake on...and for deserts keep it to the 3 bite rule.....the less you concentrate on food and slipping up the better it will be...just portion your food out..and even if u have to start ordering from the kids menu.....or opt for a salad..almost every restaurant has them.0 -
I hear ya mstanley! Weekends are killing me to! Although it doesn't help that I live in New Orleans and its Mardi Gras season! I like the idea of trying to burn 600+ calories on the weekends, Then you will be able to have more room to eat before you go out. And I agree with the comment of eating before you go out. It'll not only help you make better choices, but it can help those of us on a budget by ordering less!0

LIke everyone else i agree weekends are tough!! I've noticed the past few i've filled a big 1.5L water bottle up and keep it w/ me and i've been finally drinking my water on weekends!! I like the idea of eating before you go out, i think i'll try that, b/c honestly there are times i'm looking to eat and thing no i don't want to waste my appetite on random food when i can get something really good haha!! Also drinking water w/ dinner is a good one i noticed the amount of alcohol i didn't consume by drinking water w/ dinner!!0

Thanks for all of the advice! I appreciate it. I'm going to have to try some of the suggestions. Part of my problem is that I haven't been able to make it to the gym on the weekends. My daughter plays basketball on Saturday mornings, and then I also use Saturday to do our grocery shopping, house cleaning, etc. Hopefully once basketball is over in a couple of weeks, then things will get better. Then Sundays are usually pretty busy for me too. I'm hoping that I can start walking some each day on the weekend and maybe I can burn some of those calories that way. I am definitely going to try to start eating something healthy before I go out! I think that will help a lot. I have definitely cut down on what I eat,.0

Weekends are killer for me too! Our social network makes it difficult to eat healthy, and don't even get me started on alcohol consumption!!! And then of course the beer munchies begin afterward. It's NEVER ending and killing me! I need to concentrate on drinking as much, if not more, water on the weekends. I always forget!

Everyone,
If I can just make some suggestions. Clearly defining your goals, having them written down where you see them repeatedly, will keep you on track. You may have heard, "nothing tastes as good as thin feels," but sometimes that just isn't enough to keep us going. MStanley, is your husband aware of your nutrition and fitness goals? Perhaps you guys could come up with some restaurants that he enjoys and that offer healthy options for you. There is always SOMETHING that you can do, even if it's a subpar choice. At Mexican restaurants, grilled chicken fajitas are a good choice. Just leave off the sour cream, loads of cheese and guacamole, and tortilla. Essentially, the protein is a good choice, and salsa always provides a tasty condiment to just about anything. As for the drinks, it is hard to get away from them. But margaritas pack a lot of calories, and alcohol is processed in your body first, followed by sugar (carbs), protein, and then fat. We also make poorer eating choices when we drink, so sometimes it's best to just avoid them if you can.0 -
Thanks everyone! I'm going to keep trying to cut back on the weekends. I need to lose some weight badly. I want my clothes to fit better (and be able to buy smaller clothes). I want to look better, but most importantly, I want to feel better. I want to lower my blood pressure and cholestorol. Those are the goals I need to keep in mind when Friday rolls around! Thanks!0
