There are many very knowledgeable people here. Some of the weight training guys are a bit about cutting the grass with nail clippers one blade at a time. They have been immersed in the world of weight training and forget there are lots of women here who are new to this.

Both sides could take a deep breath here. No offense was intended. Don't get so sensitive. Be willing to learn.

    1. There's no such thing as toning

    2. Focusing on one body part per week is about the silliest way you could approach resistance training.

I guess elaboraion on my part could have prevented this whole deal. And as for toning its what I've always called strength training/conditioning. Those around me I explain to them what I mean. And yea I'm sensitive its not your problem but a lil tact goes a long way

I do agree completely. Tact goes along way. He had good intentions just not the best of delivery. Thank you very much

I think the delivery was spot on. Correct. To the point.

It isn't as if his post went completely unnoticed, now is it? He's found a distinctive way to get people's attention, and make the message heard.
  • I agree nothing wrong with what UpoThisRock said. Truth hurts? Suck it up :P

The truth does not have to "hurt"...not if the person delivers it in a loving or caring way...Im sorry if you have experienced painful truth a lot in your life...

I do agree completely. Tact goes along way. He had good intentions just not the best of delivery. Thank you very much

Why should he have to deliver it in a "loving or caring way"? Should he hand you a free kitten and some hugs too? Lol xD

Looking at it all he said was it was silly... silly is offensive now too?!
Just have to have thicker skin. No need to get offended over silly things like this. OOPS I said silly. I think I offended you all now:noway:

sorry I was unclear as to my motivations...Amy clarified by saying I know what she is going through right now...Im sorry if yall felt it was over the top and maybe if I had waiting a few minutes it would have not been as verbose, but my friends are important to me and I work hard to help motivate them and get the same in return. I have been through a lot with them and I know how one teeny tiny little negative response, even if not intended to be, can hurt some one or set them back. Not that this would have happened in this case, she is a tough cookie. People sometimes don't fully understand how their words affect people and not every one is as "tough skinned" as others would like them to be...I just don't see why it is a burden to take a little extra care to be as sensitive as possible when telling some one they have something wrong......So I will take my own advice and say I am truly sorry for going a little crazy with defending Amy. Maybe what I should have said is that maybe there is a nicer way to put it next time so that the person receiving it does not get their feelings hurt and can benefit from it. Saying she, or I, or anyone should have tougher skin is not a solution. People's feelings are what they are and all we can do is try our best not to hurt them and just apologize if we do cause most of the time we did not mean to...Right? All I am saying is that it's HOW he said it...It came off more as "you are an idot" rather than "hey I wanna help you out" That's all. ANYWHO.......

Semantics of what you call resistance training aside, the main issue is that your program is set up to fail.

Once you've helped people for the same thing, over a hundred times, tact and patience runs thin. Nothing but help was intended, and it's quick and to the point so you can get on and help others.

I wasn't looking for kittens (though I will take a puppy if anyone wants to give me one....). I was just thinking that a bit more elaboration would be helpful and probably go further than a curt "you're doing it wrong" in putting people on the right track.

In the spirit of goodwill, though, most people on this site have never heard of isolation lifts and compound lifts. You guys were totally right-on, but again, cutting the lawn with fingernail clippers one blade at a time. Which is what you have chosen as your approach.

And women who aren't eating enough can be overly protective. So we can all learn something here. Except me, apparently. I've chosen to get into this and I don't even care one way or the other.

    .....and, go.....

Im glad non of my teachers in school ran out of patience teaching me something they had taught 100's of times and thought should be understood right away... But we can't all have the patience of teachers...or we all would be. If you really want to help people, do you really get tired of it? And if so, they why bother, just let someone else do it. There are plenty of people here that know the same things you do...you don't have to save us all. :)

However, not everyone is interested in your advice. Some people make threads and never even come back and respond to their own threads. Going into detail on my thoughts on strength training questions is going to take a few paragraphs. And I'm more than happy to run off at the mouth if someone has a specific question, but I'm not going to spend the time and energy doing so for someone that may not even be interested in what I have to say. As I said earlier in the thread, detailed communications are better done in personal messages.

It's not. As Sidesteal pointed out earlier, beginner routines are typically focused on very basic, full body routines, centered around compound lifts done 3x per week. The reasoning is that the adaptations that a beginner sees to weight training is relatively dramatic, and not much stimulation is needed beyond the basics. The focus here is learning the lifts properly, laying a good foundation for you to get stronger.

The OP's approach is much more akin to "cutting the lawn with fingernail clippers" than what I would recommend.

Ok see that makes sense. I also do moves that include all muscle groups together. I figured I would add more targeted moves in with them. I really have a small amount of knowledge in this area so again whatever correct info one can offer I don't mind to hear at all. Thanks for explaining that.

HAHA so not what I intended. It feels more natural to me though, focusing on one part lol

If you're doing the proper compound lifts, your whole body get targeted, there's no need to target specific areas.

I now see that you probably did intend to help her. Maybe, if this is the case, you could have said something like "In my experience this may not be the best method for you. If you want, you could message me exactly what you are trying to achieve and I would be happy to help you with what I can"..I get what you just said about having a lot to say and the time it takes....And your time is just as important as anyone's. But if it had been me you were talking to I would not have thought you had anything to offer from that comment and would not have solicited your help...Cause i have found a lot of people on here as well that are quick to say, "you don't know what you are talking about" "your ignorant" or whatever, but then don't really know anything themselves or have all kinds of bad info themselves....So, it seems you may have some genuine info to share and I for one would be more than happy to learn if you are willing to share :) I am fairly new to this still and have come a long way but could use some advice on how to keep going and get better results.

Triceps, shoulders and chest are all hit in compound pressing movements such as bench press and overhead press.

yea Amyboo! I know that sometimes some of the dvds I follow feel like they are not doing anything for my arms but the next day they are sore...and even if they are not sore, you are still working them more than you might think you are. I know I can do twice the push ups I could do a month ago and I would not have thought I was doing anything to my arms....now, it could be that I have lost a lot of weight and it's just easier to lift myself LOLZ but I am gonna stick with my arms are getting stronger!
